Resident Evil might be announced at E3 2016 and would go back to Resident Evil's horror roots! Would it be released for NX? Who knows...

CEO of Japanese video game consultancy firm Kantan Games, Serkan Toto, believes that Resident Evil 7 is in development and that it will return to the series' "horror roots".

Toto stated on Twitter that "The entire game will go back to RE's horror roots and (essentially) be a clean slate."

He further noted that it will be revealed at E3 and that Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain and P.T. designer Jordan Amaro will be working on it.

None of this has been officially confirmed as of yet, so let's file it as a rumour for now. But coupled with everything else going on, it sounds quite plausible.

It certainly looks all but confirmed to be well into development. It's all a bunch of 'ifs' at this point, but if NX is comparable in power to the other consoles I see no reason why it won't be ported onto it, particularly if NX has a good start.

Though what I'm definitely not gonna buy into is this rumour that Capcom suddenly care so much about Resident Evil and its fans that they're making the next big budget Resi game a survival horror version. I'll believe that when I see it. I'll be watching E3 of course but I don't expect to be impressed by Resident Evil 7. Modern Capcom will miss the forest for the trees somehow I'm sure, then they'll blame it on someone/something else if the game fails in one capacity or another.

I want Capcom to prove me wrong, but I ain't expecting it. At all.

Pretty much. I recall similar things being said about 6. And Revelations before it. Maybe the warm reception of the HD remasters has made them rethink a few things, but I doubt it.

At this point, I'd rather see the franchise embrace the action-horror label completely. Reboot everything (especially the convoluted plot) and take RE4 as a blueprint for future installments.

@Marce2240 Now that Umbrella Corps (a Resident Evil shooter sub-series) exists, I hope Resident Evil goes back to its roots. Plus, Resident Evil Revelations sub-series and Resident Evil and Resident Evil 0 remasters have been successful, and Resident Evil 2 Remake is already in the works.

@VanillaLake I keep forgetting Umbrella Corps is a thing. Was Revelations 2 successful, though? I lost interest on it once they announced it was episodic. True about the RE2 remake, though, but we still have to see which form it will take. It might play similarly to 6, only in RE2's setting.

@Marce2240 Yes, Revelations 2 was successful, even though it was a budget project like Revelations 1. They also released a physical disc (I got it) including all episodes once the last episode was released digitally.

Capcom seems to have discovered that its horror-ish RE games can be money-makers (particularly since REmake HD did so well), so I hope RE7 is a proper return to form.

Going back to horror roots is probably marketing translation to say going back to lower budget. RE6 sold well but it failed to make money. Mostly because the budget was stupidly high (and it shows with top notch cinematics and voice acting for any language available) to get the COD/GTA audience.

I don't think we will go back to tank controls and still camera though. The gamecube remakes did well according to Capcom but the number are far from being impressive for games with the name Resident Evil on the box. They even sold less than the gamecube versions in a much bigger market. The Revelations games and the Racoon city spin off did much better. Probably thanks to more modern controls.

Not sure if RE7 will come on NX though. Revelations tanked hard on WiiU. And only RE4 was released on the Virtual Console.

@VanillaLake Well, glad to hear that. I enjoyed Revelations, and I think there's a place for the more action-oriented RE titles despite how much they've distanced the franchise from its roots. I too don't see any reason why both styles can't coexist.

But again, Capcom has said these things in the past. I'm not getting my hopes up.

@Yellowkoopa We don't even know what the NX is, much less if it's easy or not to port games to it. It's a bit too early to say anything about this, it can go either way.

Resident Evil 6 was the only proper Resi game that I couldn't be bothered to finish - even once. I completed all the other Resi games multiple times - including Code Veronica on Dreamcast etc.

I really hope that Capcom do go back to the more horror and exploration/puzzle solving route than action.
