@WebHead: That doesn't look bad at all but like you said, I would also prefer it with physical X and Y buttons. I wonder why that concept design has two mini-USB ports though.

My prediction is that the controller will have some sort of a screen - were it a freeform one or not. They've seen the use of two screens as a part of gaming ever since the original DS and I doubt that they will be going in other direction now. Take a look at the PS4 controller or the Steam controller: while neither of those have a screen (the Steam controller did have a small screen at least in the beginning) but both of those are equipped with parts that can notice simple touches and swipes - stables for touch screens. The trend is towards atypical controlling. The days of just a d-pad, buttons, and sticks are gone: controllers are getting more different ways of controlling the game. I doubt Nintendo's only gimmick for the controller are the patented scroll wheel shoulder buttons (which I don't think have yet been confirmed officially though). Especially not since they are apparently porting Wii U games for the system. Having only one three would also be bad considering the inevitable DS and 3DS Virtual Console releases for NX.

Someone asked how much would we be prepared to spend on a controller with a freeform screen. Well, how much are people prepared to spend on a DualShock 4? The light facing the TV screen was added only because the VR team told Sony to do it which sounds like a terrible waste of money for the players who don't even want to dive into the VR craze.

@Nego: I would assume that screen size, shape, and number of holes would factor in. My guess would be $20-30 depending on those factors.

Special apps, they exist. Nintendo could release a "nx second screen" app for mobile and have it pre installed on nxso they can connect ala remote play and smart glass. I think it makes perfect sense, especially with Japan becoming more mobile by the day and a lot of people have one.

The issue is that there is a huge variation in specs. The Wii U GamePad has a 480p 16:9 display with 5Ghz WiFi (I assume N300). For a phone/tablet? Even that's not guaranteed especially if you include some older devices that people might have. Particularly the wireless spec. The Wii U GamePad uses a single non-shared link between the GamePad and Wii U to do its work. I assume that if you used your phone you'd probably end up using your router to do the work.....

If there isn't a guarantee of a certain level of performance? I'm not sure Nintendo would go for it. People give Nintendo crap for not pushing graphical horsepower hard. But they never skimp on the quality of the experience.

Or perhaps Nintendo sells it's own basic mini tablet separately. Docks to the controller for second screen. It'll be like PS camera but for nx sorta.

@skywake: yeah pretty much honestly. Maybe that could be why there's supposedly no handheld.

Even though I prefer physical buttons for the instant feedback pressing them gives you, I don't mind touchscreen buttons on the 3DS or on a smart phone. But I don't get them on a separate controller because if you are playing on a TV, you have to take your eyes off of it just to see where the button is on the controller. Physical buttons do not have this problem as you can easily just feel them with your fingers.

The fan-made concept images @mario_yo posted look alright (the controller does look a bit uncomfortable though) and it makes me hope for a hybrid of both physical and touch screen buttons if Nintendo feels inclined to add in the latter.

This so much. I'm 95% sure the Sharp freeform display is getting put in Nintendo's next handheld. It just doesn't make sense on so many fronts for their console.

It isn't super easy to use a smartphone as a second screen, somehow you need to send a video stream with minimal latency for it to be viable. Smartphones doesn't have video in, so it isn't as easy as it sounds.

Mario Maker is pretty much the only one I can think of, and even with that, they could allow players to use the 3DS/whatever Nintendo's next handheld is as a second screen.

The thing about the Wii U is that it doesn't really do much that other devices can't do. Assymetric Play and whatever Starfox Zero's control mechanic is are some of the few out there. So for the most part, they can port to have Wii Remote or handheld device compatibility for those games that use motion controls or touch controls.

Glad my spitballing inspired so much discussion — just to clarify, it's only that, and definitely not a prediction. I'm trying to expect the unexpected and reach for some out-there ideas, since we're dealing with Nintendo.

Everyone's made some really salient points on the prospect. The only prediction I'd be wary of is assuming Nintendo is going to remove a secondary screen from the equation in favor of simply porting over altered versions of the Wii U's big hitters. Without a secondary screen — whether it's a free-form display on a controller or handheld, or an ancillary smart device (bespoke or not) — Nintendo loses the ability to redistribute (and re-sell) the entire DS, 3DS and Wii U library, Virtual Console style. I don't think they'll pass up on that opportunity, in any case.

@VelvetElvis: Hence why i now think there's 2 devices: A home console with a pro controller and an "Appad", a cheap minitablet that runs NXOS, does stuff. then can attach to the pro controller and sync to the console, hence 2nd screen.

Of the 20 best selling Wii U games? I reckon about 7 didn't need it at all and 6 definitely needed it. The other 7 are somewhere in the middle. Either they didn't need it but it added a lot to the controls like the Zelda ports or Pikmin. To the other end where it was needed but they could change the game to make it work without it like Splatoon, 3D World and ZombiU.

And the 6 that definitely needed it aren't necessarily the ones people get hyped about. Super Mario Maker and Captain Toad are obviously a big deal. But the other ones are Nintendo Land, Wii Party U, Mario Party and Wii Fit U. Not so much.

Is it safe to assume the NX won't have a default Gamepad as its controller?

Aonuma said. “We realized that having something on the GamePad and looking back and forth between the TV screen and the GamePad actually disrupts the gameplay, and the concentration that the game player may be experiencing. You have your car’s GPS system on your dash. If you had it down in your lap, you’re going to get into an accident!”

This makes me now think that the gamepad for the NX won't have a screen nor will it be the new handheld. I wouldn't mind if they leave the screen out and focus on ergonomics, and new button concepts with the new gamepad.

I actually feel really disappointed about the developers not developing the new Zelda game without Wii Remote combat like in Skyward Sword I will still buy the new Zelda game, and will helplessly feel irritated that the game "HAD" to use the Wii U Gamepad... Honestly, this game should of been designed with the already amazing immersive combat of the Wii Remote. I bet the developers made the decision to use the Wii U Gamepad for insecurity of the Wii U console not meeting expectation of Wii U owners. If that's the case, then its a shame the new Zelda game didn't at least have the Wii Remote combat and allow the Wii U Gamepad as an alternative way to play. Couldn't they''re been better decisions of using Wii U Gamepad? Link using the best combat experience from using the Wii Remote to adventure and combat (like in Skyward Sword) while the Wii U Gamepad is used in co-op play (online or offline). Naive, Link's fairy (hope she's in the game) or Link's wolf companion to help fight, scout, loot, puzzle, adventure, craft. etc, all from second player using the Wii U Gamepad. I hope the new Zelda game for Wii U is actually different than the NX. I would want the developers to excel Zelda's combat from Skyward Sword of utilising the Wii Remote on the NX. It's hard to believe Wii U Gamepad is better than the Wii Remote for a Zelda game. Skyward Sword already made ever reason how Nintendo secured its players and consumers for the next Zelda game - its gameplay and amazing combat like no other!

@Mission007
Why wouldn't they develop with the Gamepad as the main controller? After all, it is the controller bundled with the Wii U. Maybe the Wii remote could have been an alternative, but never the main scheme.

Plus, I doubt they are going with Skyward Sword's controls again, they were far too divisive between the fandom. Some loved it, like you, some hated it, like me.

And most likely the controls for any new Zelda after Breath of the Wind will be based on the NX's main controller - and due to BotW control scheme it doesn't seem they will be returning to motion controls.

I have a chronic lack of time, for everything.

ErrantEmbers

@Mission007 There was no chance they were going to bring back Skyward Swords controls. As much as I liked them myself, they were a one time deal. For one, making BotW use Wii motion plus controls would force players to buy a new Wii remote + nunchuk if they don't have one already. People who skipped the Wii or never upgraded their controller to the Motion Plus will have to fork over $40-60 extra to play the game unless Nintendo included a Wii Motion Plus & nunchuk with every copy which there's no way they'd do that and be able to keep the pricing below $60. Another thing is making the controls optional to use the Wii Motion Plus is it wouldn't work like it did in Skyward Sword since the Wii U gamepad can't replicate those movements. So at best you'd have something like Twilight Princess on Wii where its not true Motion controls like Skyward Sword but rather using motion in place of pushing a button. They way they made Skyward Sword was very specific and it really couldn't have been done with traditional controls, at least not with altering combat and many puzzles completely. So yes it stinks we'll probably never get a Zelda game again with controls like Skyward Sword's but consider that game a unique piece in the Zelda franchise. BotW's focus is exploration and freedom, not motion controls.

DefHalan

@KrakenSoup since the tech was already made in Skyward Sword, I wonder how difficult it would have been to make Motion Plus an optional control method. With 9 more months before launch, they could still add them. Even if the controls aren't perfect I think some would appreciate that and it might give it more replay value too lol

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...
