@faint I do wonder if that is because of YouTubers, something we know Nintendo doesn't like. YouTubers do have a lot of popularity (something I don't understand) and that could be what they are talking about.

Mainly for my post I was pointing out that Nintendo shouldn't actually target specific audiences like that.

I think this is a big thing. Nintendo should really drop their current policy regarding YouTubers, it isn't like they lose money if someone streams a Mario game. I could understand that practice a bit more if they had cinematic games where game play is just a means to drive the story (I.e heavy rain).

Personally I have started to look at playthroughs before I buy certain titles. Mostly because companies never talk about game play anymore.

Another thing is that Nintendo has lost the pre-school audience to tablets. If they want to stay relevant there, they need to speed up their efforts. My kids never touches their 2ds, but they frequently use their tablets. They do however play some Wii U because we have one.

Yoshi is a favorite for me and my kids. Kirby was better for them though, some levels are to hard in Yoshi. I thought star fox could have been a good co-op but it was a letdown. It reinforced my thoughts on Miyamoto.

Pokémon go is a blast for them, but it isn't a Nintendo game. And they don't have their own phones so they can't play it by themselves.

Tl;dr Nintendo is out of touch in the digital era.

@DefHalan I agree that Nintendo shouldn't make soulless focus tested games. However, I think there's smarter, more creative and more effective ways to reach today's kids. It does however, require Nintendo to be more in touch with the digital age, and that's something they still need to work on.

I hear low-hanging jeans are popular with young kids these days. As are tube tops and tight pants.

I think we all know where I'm going with this. And don't worry, I'm sure therapy is in Reggie's health care plan.

Nintendo really needs to scale back the number of Mario-based universe games that there are. The Wii U had: 3D World, Mario Maker, Mario Kart 8, Super Mario Bros U, Yoshi's Wooly World, Paper Mario: Color Splash, Captain Toad, Mario Tennis, Mario Party 10. The 3DS had: 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Bros 2, Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, Mario Party: Island Tour.

That's an absurd amount of Mario-centric games and I'm probably missing some too. And don't get me wrong- I appreciate that each of those games is very distinct from the other- you have board games, racing games, RPG, platformers and so on. But the truth is they would all come under the "Mario brand" therefore making the Nintendo catalogue seem small. And if someone doesn't like Mario because of their experience with one type of Mario game, do you think it might impact on their possibility of trying other Mario games or even getting a Nintendo system?

Nintendo needs to focus on creating new IPs that can demonstrate more clearly the diversity of games it offers. That doesn't mean they all need to include more mature content or themes, although I think they could consider including a few more mature games into the mix

I think if there was a clamp down on under age gaming and more control over some micro transactions that are basically gambling (like loot crates) that would help Nintendo's family friendly cause. Maybe. Actually. I don't know lol.

I'll bite. Warning: gonna be pretty facetious and just kinda lookin for a kick. Please don't take this seriously (but kinda do) lol

-Twitch and Youtube streaming integration for NX (no-brainer)
-More Mountain Dew sponsorships. We're talking at least for every 1st-party game.
-At least one game for each of the following: FPS like CoD or Battlefield (sorry, Splatoon - need more blood to count, see below), MOBA like League or DotA, and generic retro-looking 2D Roguelike that everyone will somehow drool over but is, in fact, basically a copy of stuff Nintendo has already been doing for years and people love to hate on
-More blood and grizzled dudes randomly yelling curses at the top of their lungs. Maybe throw in more scripted knife fights.
-Voice chat mandatory for every game - every NX launches with a headset that would trick people into thinking it actually hooks up to an Xbox
-No more single-player games. Everything must be some kind of competitive online game, very "watchable" for the Twitch audience. Success of every game will then be determined by Twitch viewer counts. No exceptions.
-If Nintendo mistakenly do release a single-player game, it absolutely MUST be "open world" in every way, even if that means the actual gameplay is as boring as weeding a garden, even if it doesn't fit with the vision of the game. Mario? Open World. Samus? Open World. Splatoon? Open World. Kirby? Open World. MORE OPEN WORLD BECAUSE IT'S THE BEST THING EVER okiamdonelol

... uhm... I think that's about it. If anyone actually reads this whole thing... thanks!

@rallydefault One thing you neglected was virtual packets of cards you can buy with a chance of feeling superior to every one else. Then they can make an app that simulates buying and opening packets of virtual cards (virtual virtual cards (omg - what is the world coming to!)) so kids can be alt tabbing to this when the teacher is not looking. I'm looking at you Fifa!

Advertise worth a damn. People who don't already care about Nintendo don't follow them on social media, so they'll need some actual... you know, advertisements. Ideally ones without 5-12 year olds advertising the games, since a lot of kids like to play what older teens are playing (not what those their own age and their parents are playing).

Major third party games on their systems. For the UK, FIFA and Call of Duty would be the main ones here. These games need to also be on par with the Xbox and Playstation versions on a feature level.

And a couple more 'cool' games aimed at older audiences. Overly cute works for some series, but for others... this isn't Japan. Get over it and focus on the worldwide market.

I feel there should be a comfortable middle ground between what's "cute" and what's "cool". It doesn't have to be black and white.

I think that there's one more nuanced idea to this discussion that isn't being discussed. How can we keep up with what is "popular" in a culture that's as divided as the post-internet world? Just this year, Pokemon GO, Zootopia, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Captain America: Civil War, God of War 4, Star Trek: Beyond, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Blink-182's new album, and more all are/were "popular". That last one should solidify the point. Blink-182 is "popular" again. This cultural divide is so big that "popular" just means "relevant to me and my social circles" at this point.

And, to me, that means they shouldn't focus on a particular group like this. I think rather than trying to figure out what the "kids" want, they figure out what customers are willing to buy.

Todays' youth do not care about anything nintendo does that is not pokemon go, and they only play games on their iphone and ipad because the games are free or games on the xbox like halo, call of duty, minecraft and madden they don"t care about nintendo's games becuse they are too colorful and not edgy enough. The only way for nintendo to appeal to children today is to (1) make the nx and all of its games free with microtransactions (2) only make games that are edgy gritty and dark or make it a third person shooter that looks like overwatch (3) stop making games on their consoles and put all their games on iphones and ipads and (4) put all their games on x-box and playstation. So in the end nintendo will never appeal to anyone under the age of 18 besides a few individuals, unless there is a renaissance of video games.

I think Nintendo's idea of exclusively targeting kids is its greatest weakness. I honestly think that Nintendo needs to target the parents, both the non-gaming parents and especially those who do. Nintendo's early successes can be attributed to the fact that they were, essentially, the only company who was providing game consoles. At least in the US, there was scarcely any competition against the NES, and so anyone looking for a console was directed to the NES. It also had the strength of one of its strongest marketing forces being the consumers themselves. When a kid went over to his friends house and got to play his NES, there's no doubt he would have wanted one for himself as well. Many parents now are those children who got an NES for Christmas. Since then, Nintendo hasn't been the only company to be able to provide game consoles and they're loss of market share across each generation (with the exception of the cheap, alternative, and widely appealing Wii). For those who have continued to play video games though, and are on a budget, they don't want a game console just for their children, they want a console that they can use as well. The PS2 had DVD playing abilities, making it a easy sale. The PS3 had BlueRay to back it, although Microsoft's advertising and brand power helped push the 360. The XB1 killed itself at E3, giving the PS4 the chance to take the lead. Put simply, Nintendo needs the games and features that are going to make the parents (who are the ones buying the console) lean toward getting it for their children.

@isaiahhoyt Isn't that kind of an extreme perspective? I mean, I understand that by the time that there is a new generation of children, the older generation is required by law to think that the new generation is completely useless and incompetent compared to their oh-so-special generation, but kids are more than just the CoD kiddies and the casuals you think they are. Now, there are some children that do meet those definitions, but there are more types of gamer kids than you think.

@isaiahhoyt the two most successful new ip's of the last ten years are minekraft and terraria. They are mostly played by kids and are not free to play. Kids want to create and choose their own way of playing a game. Nintendo has only made one ip remotely close to this and it still doesn't give the same kind of freedom. Animal crossing is also one of their most successful after nes ip's.

@faint @MrMario02 Yes I know this generation is more than those few groups that's why I said there are a-few exceptions but in my earlier post I was talking about the majority of this generation of gamers not the minority of this generation's gamers
