Would lack of at least physical backwards compatibility be a big deal? Not to me imo. If you wanna play Wii u games keep your Wii u. Probably won't be getting many games after nx launch anyway.

I think it's safe to say that the list of things that would actually turn me off a potential purchase of a video game platform a far too numerous to count. I shall instead list the 10 things that would actually make it appealing to me:
1) A new F-Zero game
2) A comfortable controller: one that isn't the size of my head, and can be used intensely for up to 2 hours without causing extreme hand-cramps for anyone whose hands aren't as big as a gorilla's
3) An HD remake or remaster of an F-Zero game
4) steady support (i.e. an average of ~4 highly-rated games per month by the end of the second year), preferably with a multitude of genres being represented in generally high quality, if not quantity
5-8) More F-Zero games
9) No region-locking for retail games. This isn't 2004 anymore, Nintendo.
10) F-Zero! Any F-Zero! F-Zero GX for Gamecube VC! F-Zero SNES 3D Classics! ANY! F-Zero!! GAME!!!
Seriously, Nintendo, do I have to spell it out in flaming cats on your lawn before you get the messege?!
If it were digital only I wouldn't want it. I live out in the boonies so I have extremely slow internet and I try to buy physical to avoid long download times. Plus I just like physical in general. I'd be pretty excited if the rumors that the NX is cartridge based turned out to be true.
I think not making an attempt at uniformed accounts that don't have to be tied to one specific console (hardware) or even cloud storage to back up downloaded games/save files would be enough alone for me to say NO to the NX. It would be ridiculous to me to think going into the year 2017 that Nintendo still can't or won't let you easily transfer your Wii U/3DS NNID data over to the NX.
I had a more refined response, but hunger got to me (I shouldn't have skipped lunch and dinner...stupid holidays...), so I'd just like to point out that as disappointed as I am with the Wii U, I'll admit that it's done an admirable job thus far - I was comparing my Wii U and Wii collections, as well as stuff I'm still interested in that I still have to get, and even a few major games that I know I'm not personally interested in, but are worth noting, and...the Wii U's already almost even keel as far as quality games go, and that's just looking at raw numbers.
Nevermind the quality vs. quantity factor, the digital games, and the fact that less games rely on pointless gimmicks (I can only think of...maybe 5 Wii U games that try something really weird with the tablet controller, and some of them are still pretty good even despite that). It's certainly had a better run than its predecessor...but, still, I've learned my lesson. Not just with Nintendo, either. I got burned by Sony on the PS Vita, and even the PS4, while successful, was something I should've held off of much longer than I did. I basically only started getting any use out of it this year, over a year after I bought it, and over 2 years after it's been on the market - the same story I had with the DS and 3DS as well. And games' prices only go down now that digital retail downloads are a thing...
TL;DR - Nintendo's gonna have a hard time convincing me to part with my money any sooner than 2.5 years after the system's release. Its competitors also would, and probably should - it's just that Nintendo's now fighting an uphill battle without any arrows. They sure as hell better be bringing a gun...
Is it programmed in blood and bound in human flesh? If so I think I'll pass.
It's made in China, so I'm pretty sure it's made from 100% Giant Panda, and packaged in the hide of a Silverback Gorilla. Not exactly the most economical of sources, but at least it'll pass most international Environmental standards.

But does it raise the dead and turn my friends into deadites?

And at this stage we know it's going to have Zelda so I'm not worried about that. Unless of course it's not at least somewhat of an upgrade from the Wii U. Then Zelda alone won't be enough. But I think that's unlikely.
