Well, the big difference compared to last year is that there hasn't been anything major game-wise to fill the gap between E3 and the next general Direct. Last year we didn't get a general Direct until early November. We just had 3 game specific Directs for Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2, and Smash to fill that gap, on top of new Mega Evolutions for ORAS and the big ESRB leak for Smash to carry us along. This year we haven't had any of that. All we've had are rumors and business stuff. The only major game news has been Pokken Tournament on Wii U, Pokemon Go, a delay for Star Fox, new Zygarde formes, and Pikmin 4's casual announcement. That's it.
Last year we came off a fantastic E3 and were just waiting to get our hands on Smash. This year we came off a less than satisfactory E3 and are awaiting news that we know is coming but hasn't gotten here yet (new membership service, first DeNA mobile game, Pokemon Z announcement, return of Nintendo Direct, etc) coupled with a holiday lineup that isn't very hype-worthy.
I'm surprised Nintendo didn't announce the release of the standard-sized New 3DS in North America through a Nintendo Direct, instead opting to announce the revision through a boring press release. Of course, the New 3DS was probably announced during the "Iwata mourning period", weeks before Tatsumi Kimishima was named Nintendo's new CEO.
If we do see a Nintendo Direct soon, it will almost certainly be about Nintendo's first mobile game and/or their Club Nintendo successor.
Nah, I was making a snarky comment against how every maintenance was supposed to be hype about something big...despite the fact that only a small percentage of them lead to anything

@LztheQuack: Ah, ok! Talking about reading too much between the lines... if Nintendo keeps using press releases the situation will become unsustainable...
It won't be anything big other than maybe a Coro Coro leak...
Since when did people start liking Twilight Princess?

@Xenocity: After their hate for Skyward sword was more popular. It is a vicious circle of Zelda fandom.
Each Zelda cycle is more vicious than the previous cycle.
The new Zelda for Wii U will hit a new high.

@Xenocity: I still find it hard to believe that the majority of Zelda fans actually change their opinion to hate every new game and grow to like it as the new one comes out. I'm sure it's all a matter of who is more vocal.
@Nicolai:
I know it's fun to watch.
HD Zelda is going to be hilarious now that Twitter has fully matured.

It was widely criticized by fans and gamers for being OOT 2.0 and lacking originality.
It's most famous nickname is OOT rehash.
