Here is how I think it will go next year under the assumption that NX launches next year:
-CN replacement and mobile game announced via PR this month.
-Nintendo Direct returns in January to announce Pokemon Z and Go over all the 2016 Nintendo 3DS and Wii U games they have.
-Reveal the NX hardware in an event in March near GDC
-NX software blowout at E3
-Launch details in September
-November 18th NX launch.

I say:

  • Nintendo Direct this month/early November announcing CN replacement, mobile game and holiday 2015/early 2016 news
  • Second Direct in January going more over 2016 titles (and Pokémon Z announcement)
  • NX reveal at a February/March event
  • Software blowout at E3
  • Launch details coinciding with the late August info dump
  • NX launches before Thanksgiving

I honestly don't know why people are thinking the NX will be released next year when we know next to nothing about it....

God first.

@VeeFlamesNL: Somehow I want to keep track of all these rumours, predictions, patent talk and whatnot to show that 99% of that was false in the end.

We were just going off the assumption that it would launch next year. Personally I'm 50/50 on '16 or '17.

Nintendo is being quiet because they feel it is strategically a good move. This is a slow year for Nintendo and I believe they are setting things up for a big future. The next big announcement is about their mobile game, and this news will be huge. The mobile game's target audience will be greater than the that of the Wii U/3DS, the Xbox One, and the PS4. It's news from Nintendo that could resonate with people people who don't own a single Nintendo system. They are hoping to see a TON of downloads. Timing is critical on this. Since it's a mobile game, and they are releasing it this year, the time between the announcement and the actual release will be short (possibly even released upon announcement). Had this been a normal game, we would already know about it.

While I understand that Iwata's death (may he RIP), and the need to hunt for a new CEO understandably shook things up a bit at Nintendo, I find it appalling that virtually NOTHING comprehensive has been done to reassure consumers that the company is ok and give them confidence going forward. There should have been a direct, some other kind of presentation, or SOMETHING to reassure consumers and let them know of great things later down the road. This all but dead silence is extremely worrisome and frustrating.

I actually don't see a problem with expecting some sort of communication from a company. It isn't like we are wondering if the company is ok, we are wondering if our investments are paying off. We invested in Nintendo's consoles and we are wanting information on the software they are releasing (or not releasing) on those consoles. So I don't think it is a problem. We aren't giving them a break, we are actually doing the opposite, we are expecting them, as an entertainment company, to entertain us and we are expressing our opinions about the entertainment they are providing.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

DefHalan nailed it. It's time for the company to come out of its she'll again. Iwata or no iwata the show must go on.

Playstation 4 isn't the most popular console right now because Sony keeps quiet about it. They engage with their customers on a regular basis, unlike what Nintendo is doing right now with the Wii U.

So yes, it is very much the companies' job to be open and inform us about their future. That's what they have a marketing branch for.

Perhaps they are saving all their resources for the NX?

That would probably be a bad move. Nintendo didn't do much with the Wii for its last year or two to save their resources for the Wii U. We all know how well that worked out for them

Nintendo Directs were an awesome and unique thing. Nintendo should get back to it ASAP.

Tbh I got used to the no update news of the Directs. I guess it's because I grew up in a time where the only way you get major news on new releases was during E3, GDC, or some other gaming conference. I love the Directs but sometimes they can reveal too much to the point you're not surprised about what's coming soon, E3 2015 comes to mind. As long as I can have fun now, the future can come later while I'm distracted.

I guess the fear of sega still lives on.

A dying animal struggles, thrashes and howls in protest as its life torn from it. To see this in action, watch Animal Planet. The same thing happens when a video game is or isn't released. To see this in action, stay here.

Nintendo is traditionally quiet until their products are nearing completion.
Every time Nintendo shows a product early on in development, they get a good amount of negative press and reactions.

Personally I like seeing the near finished product and firmish release date in the same announcement instead of having to wait a few years to get the final product from it's announcement.

The NPD Group defines a core gamer... See Nintendo isn't part of the "hardcore"/core gaming group according to NPD data.

It's pretty clear that they have virtually nothing left for this generation and they're working on next gen stuff right now that we won't see until 2016. It's going to be a long year for Nintendo fans.

That's what people have been saying since last year. Meanwhile we know that SMTxFE is coming in 2016, along with Pokken Tournament and Star Fox Zero. Zelda U will be coming eventually. Pikmin 4 is close to completion and if that TP HD rumour is true, then that's another upcoming Wii U game. Don't forget about Project Guard and Project Giant Robot, they're still in development for Wii U as well.

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

@Xenocity: They certainly used to be like that but since the Wii U released they've been as bad,if not worse than the competition. We were shown Xenoblade back in 2012 yet 3 and a half years later it's still not out,SMT X FE has long been known about but that's still months away from release,Yoshi WW was first shown well over 2 years ago and is only just releasing in the US today,Zelda U,Project Robot/Guard we have no idea when they're coming but we were first told about them over 2 years ago. There's probably more too that I can't think of just now?

Wow, 4 games. Such a packed schedule.

They don't necessarily have to be Wii U games. The NX is likely going to be out in a year, they could be launch titles.

Good job picking my comment apart. Project Giant Robot is still in development for Wii U, as is Project Guard; Platinum Games is aiding the the development of Project Guard right now. Even if they're not block-buster games, you can't just ignore those. Even if we ignore the Twilight Princess HD rumour and Pikmin 4, four big games is pretty much Nintendo's average year.

This year we got Splatoon, Super Mario Maker and arguably Yoshi's Woolly World and Xenoblade Chronicles. I wouldn't really count Kirby as a big game, but it was a nice addition nevertheless, just like Fatal Frame. In 2014? Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros., Bayonetta, Hyrule Warriors and DKC Tropical Freeze. With Pokkén Tournament, SMTxFE, Star Fox Zero and potentially more games, we're looking at a great start for 2016.

Your problem is the assumption that NX will be out by next year and that it will replace the Wii U. If the rumour is true and they started handing out dev kits just now, I think it's very unlikely that the NX will be out by next year. Let's wait and see what happens in a week and what a possible Nintendo Direct may reveal, but don't count your chickens before they hatch, nothing is set in stone yet.
