How essential is it to play previous games in the series? Is that pretty important, or can you just jump in like with Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest? I'd like to try this series out at some point, but when is another question entirely....

They catch you up a bit in 3 and to be honest the series is a subset of the Legends of heroes series. They are all connected but the modern ones do a decent enough job catching you up unless you have enough free time on your hands to play (replay) 14 Jrpgs. That being said Trails in the Sky changed the setting so I guess if you have the free time to play those three and the rest of the Trails of Cold Steel games. The crossbell games haven't left Japan as far as I know. @Tyranexx

I don't even remember what happened in I and II (and they aren't THAT old) let alone the older entries I've played.

@Ryu_Niiyama Hmm, I see. I definitely don't have time to play a whopping 14 JRPGs in the same series, but I'll tentatively pencil in both the Trails in the Sky group as well as Trails of Cold Steel for future investigation. At the very least, I'll be trying the demo out for Trails of Cold Steel III.

Thanks for the response!

This is such great news. I'm SOOOO into the 3rd game right now, and though I own it on PS because I thought it wasnt coming to Switch, I'm waiting for the Switch release to dive in. Especially since the demo save data transfers.

It's great knowing Trails III isnt just a one-off, and that the next game is also coming. These are games you don't want to miss, especially given the high quality of the port job on Switch (one of the finest ports I've seen to date judging by the demo).

@Tyranexx
I just finished the demo of Trails III, and never played any previous games aside from the first few hours.

The story summary was more than sufficient to understand the overall plot progression, what was going on in the world, who people were and how they ended up in the situations they were in.

Takes about 30 min to read through but it's all available in the demo. I recommend curling up in a recliner for half an hour, reading the story summaries for the first two games, then playing the demo.

If you're not fully engrossed by the end of the demo, your money back guaranteed! Except, its free!

@JaxonH I'll definitely be checking that demo out now, though not right away lol. A well-done summary or two will suffice in my book and save a LOT of time. Thanks for the input!

Yeah, I'm only getting around to Trails in the Sky games now but I'm also working on ToCSIII, @Tyranexx .... But since they want people to get that on Switch who may not have played any of the previous games & not have any option to, I imagine the summary would suffice
Of course, if you can play at least the 1st 2 ToCS games, that would help but if you're not yet sure how interested you are, try the demo & see how that goes

@BruceCM Yep, I think I'll stick to trying out the demo when I get around to it. Unfortunately I don't have a reliable way to play the other ToCS games right now. I'd have to set my laptop to derpy low settings. Thanks for the input!

No problem, @Tyranexx.... Just to add the ToCS games are basically ONE story, unlike the FF or DQ series

@BruceCM That's why I was initially hesitant to jump into the series, but I can live with a generalized description of everything as long as it's fairly thorough and gives me everything I need to know without all the fluff. XD

Yeah, you'd think they'd have wanted to port the 1st & 2nd before bringing III, @Tyranexx.... There was some interview with the Falcom president recently where he seemed to suggest they might do so, though

@BruceCM I'd definitely try out I & II if I end up liking the demo for III!

Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever played a NIS title....I was eying Ys VIII for awhile and might still get it, but it's not top priority right now.

Well, they're not really NIS titles, @Tyranexx .... They just do the localizing & porting! Legend of Heroes & Ys games are both made by Falcom Ys VIII has been in a couple of good sales, so maybe get that then, if you fancy trying it! I played Vita version of that, then got Switch physical for the added content & finally got it on Steam, in their last sale

@BruceCM D'oh, you're right! I got the two mixed around. XD Silly me. I suppose that reinforces how "familiar" I am with Falcom's titles.

I might keep an eye out for sales of Ys VIII, though I would prefer to pick it up in physical format when I do so. That'll depend on how tempting the digital sales are, though. I have plenty of backlogged JRPGs on the Switch already, so I'm not too keen to add to that pile just yet lol.

I gathered you weren't very familiar with them, @Tyranexx .... I've had most of the NISA published games, though

My Vita version of Trails Of Cold Steel as arrived with art book. Late after being delivered incorrectly to someone streets away who kindly walked it over. So it’s missed the pre Xenoblade window but I look forward to trying the series soon.

I have the collector edition of the original Trails of Cold Steel on Vita. The collector edition of the 2nd one on PS4, and will have the collector edition of the 3rd and 4th on Switch.

After playing Trails of Cold Steel III demo on Switch, I'm very pleased with how improved the visuals are compared to the first one on Vita. Not that it looked bad, but it distinctly looked like a handheld title. The new one on Switch looks dang near identical to the Steam version, barring the ultra HD resolution.

@JaxonH great news. By starting with the Vita games I’ll appreciate the upgrade ... when I finally get to the later ones.

I’ll probably be playing my Switch backlog once it’s successor arrives. I seem to spend a lot of time still playing 3DS and Vita games now.

@BruceCM Most Falcom games have flown off my radar until ToCS came up. It's one of the negatives to mostly sticking with one company out of both time constraints and a love of certain franchises. XD
