Get rid of the blue and white colours? Please don't. No black consoles, please...the world is dark enough.

Something people should realise:

This is a hypothetical, since I don't necessarily see it happening, but if the 3DS continues to flop, and the Wii U fails, Nintendo will be over. This isn't the Virtual Boy all over again - back then the stakes were far lower and games companies could afford to make mistakes. Nintendo has no fallback to these two consoles. They have to succeed or Nintendo will find itself pushed out of the market.

Still think an acquisition by a bigger company would be the best win for everyone. Nintendo wins from having more resources. Apple (because I hope it's Apple) wins by having a great videogaming company building out that part of its business. Consumers win because the melding of Apple accessibilty and raw marketing power with Nintendo's creativity would make for some awesome videogaming experiences.

Imagine this scenario - Apple releases its TV (which is rumoured), with iTunes built in. Nintendo designs a wireless controller and a bunch of games to go on it. This games can then be moved to iPad or iPhone for play on the go. It's a connected world, and awesome for everyone.

Just try and hide your skepticism

Also, the first holiday season hasn't come yet and the big titles haven't been released yet. Perhaps we should have said the same thing about SCEA when the PS3 came out? No? Because the PS3 has been doing well over the past couple of years

Nintendo isn't going to fail. Yes, times are tough now and Nintendo made some bad decisions, but as long as they can keep turning out good games and have a good variety of titles on there systems they will be fine. If Nintendo quits I would seriously wonder if I would quit buying new games, or only buy a few. Without Nintendo around somewhere, I don't know if the gaming world would be that great.

Nintendo will survive at the end of the day, but I think the casual audiences' wind in Nintendo's sails from the 2006-2010 era is waning.

This. The non-gamer types are pretty wishy washy. They just want a game to play when they are waiting for something or have 5 minutes of free time. Look at Angry Birds. I predict Nintendo will lose much of the casual market at this point, too much super cheap games on phones, they can't compete with that. Why would a non-gamer buy a new system when they can buy a dirt cheap game on their phone? Nintendo should still focus on casual gamers, but they need to start putting more effort into the gamer consumer again. They are the ones that will stick around and be a reliable source for money.

Blue and white? I want transparent systems. Now that would be cool. See the inner workings of your system.

The 3DS needs to be marketed MUCH more aggressively. It's not just a new handheld console, it's 3D. 3D. There hasn't been enough buzz created — not necessarily with gamers, but with the parents who buy these consoles for their kids. Walk through a grocery store and ask the 40-somethings if they know about a device that plays 3D games. Almost all of them will say no. That's terrible marketing. And not having a strong lineup of games to spur sales is also terrible marketing. This can all be fixed by Christmas, but Nintendo needs to get aggressive.

That said, I don't think the 3DS will bring down the company if it fails. Companies withstand infrequent major failures. However, if the 3DS fails badly AND Wii U does the same behind it, then I can see Nintendo being in trouble ... stuck with two consoles that very few people own. But if they can get these things in people's hands — even at a revenue loss — they'll be fine. Get the consoles out there, then rake in the glue with Mario, Zelda, Wii Fit, Donkey Kong, etc.

The PS3 had a long lifespan, and Sony knew it - they were prepared to bite down on a couple of bad years to have a better run at the end. Nintendo is clearly expecting more instant results from its consoles.

That said, I more or less agree - assuming Nintendo does have a longer view of the consoles than what people initially assumed.

Why? I will never understand why people get so scared with their "favourite" company gets acquired by someone bigger. It's almost always for the best, and when it comes to massive acquisitions like this one would be (or Popcap being acquired by EA), very little about the company actually changes.

Apple is an innovative, exciting company that produces superb products. It's quite literally the American version of the Nintendo mindset. Bringing the two corporations together would be a massive win for everyone, but Sony and Microsoft. Microsoft especially should fear such an event.

Unfortunately it's not likely because Apple doesn't tend to make billion dollar acquisitions. But one can dream.

Nintendo should still focus on casual gamers, but they need to start putting more effort into the gamer consumer again.

Because competing against the budgets of Sony and Microsoft is so easy.

Nintendo went after the casual market with the Wii because it had to, and it saw a market at the time that hadn't been tapped. Now it's tapped out Nintendo is running out of niches.

There's a rule of business - it's much cheaper and easier to keep existing customers than win new ones from a competitor. There's no new customers, and Nintendo's resources to win back Sony and Microsoft customers is limited. It's a company that's stuck in a very tight spot.

Which is again why I would like to see Nintendo be acquired, and become relevant again through associated branding.

Come on everyone. The 3DS isn't a flop. It just hasn't met Nintendo's expectations yet. That is something entirely different then a flop. It sold 3,61 million units as of March 31. Nintendo expected 4 million. And it's only going up by with the upcoming price cut and great games that they have lined up for the end of the year.

When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth.

Because being acquired means you have to answer to somebody else. Somebody becomes the boss of your operations. Nintendo pushes out quality products because there's no one they have to check in with but themselves. Apple may be able to push Nintendo's branding out further, but they may place some restrictions on whatever it is Nintendo wants to create, and since Apple is an electronics company first and foremost, not a video game company, those restrictions may not be for the better. This doesn't just apply to Nintendo. Any company that gets bought out would fall under these circumstances. Any company.

That's factually incorrect. Nintendo answers to its shareholders right now. It pushes out quality products because that's its business strategy to sell the most units possible and make the most amount of money possible. It is not done because Nintendo loves gaming oh so much more than Sony and Microsoft and Apple. It's business. And Nintendo does have a boss already.

Answering to Apple's shareholders would be no different in effect to answering to Nintendo's shareholders. Most shareholders don't even care about the industry they're investing in (in fact, it helps not to care about the industry you're investing in, as it helps minimise personal feelings over the companies you're investing in).

On to your second point. If Apple acquired Nintendo for the multiple billion dollars it would take, do you honestly think Apple would have any interst in ripping Nintendo to shreads? No. Big acquisitions are made because company A WANTS what company B offers.

Apple may well be an electronics company, but it shares the same philosophy to electronics that Nintendo believes in for videogames - make good quality products that people want to use, and are easy to use. They're a natural fit for each other - especially since Apple wants to be involved in the games industry, and Nintendo wants to have better online capabilities, more content partnerships etc etc.

@Waltz: Ignorance is bliss. They don't understand business

Also, if no one is convinced by Waltz's argument look up some companies and see what bigger company owns them. Need a good example? Look at all the companies Disney owns

Not sure if that is sarcasm or not - the Internet is nasty that way, :-/. But anyway, yeah, ESPN (which Disney largely owns) is a pretty good example of that. If things played out between those two like people on this forum as suggesting would happen with Apple and Nintendo, then ESPN would be screening 24/7 Jonas Brothers.

A couple of other good examples - Intel owns McAffee. Microsoft owns Skype. EA owns Chillingo. Acquisitions are just a normal process in capitalism, and (especially with the large ones) don't mean much at all at the end-user level.

@Waltz: I can see many positives coming from your idea after seeing Disney's acquisition of Marvel. It was nothing short of good for Marvel despite all the skepticism. Look at how much Disney is slapping their name on it....oh wait...

I'm surprised that Disney hasn't changed Marvel's name to "Marvel by Disney," or just "Disney-ha-we-own-Marvel-suckers" yet. I'm also surprised Disney hasn't demanded the Marvel artists start drawing the Club Penguin comics yet, actually.

This is what happens with big acquisitions, apparently

Honestly, I'm a big fan of acquisitions. My ideal world would have perhaps 4 or 5 very, very large corporation groups that own all the entertainment properties in the world. 4 or 5 would be enough to maintain competition, but would also mean we could get seamless experiences. And I would stop having to carry around 20 different devices and have 100 different apps on my iPad.

20 years from now things will probably change. But it will be a slow process, and Disney didn't buy Marvel to ruin it. Even if it does become "Marvel by Disney," it'll still be Marvel talent making the stuff. As far as I'm aware Disney didn't sack anyone important.

And as I've mentioned before, now Marvel has a lot more money to play with, and the security of being part of a mega-massive company. Win win

Jr-Joe

@GreatManaTree Hopefully Nintendo releases a black console alongside the white one, because the current color scheme IMO is just not working. I think if Nintendo mixed it up like they did with the gamecube (indigo and black) and other previous systems they would get more peoples attention. I want to see Nintendo mix it up like they did back in the day.
...bring back multicolor buttons too.

3DS hasn't even been out six months and already it's death of Nintendo.
How long do you suppose it took the N64 to hit it's stride?
Sony was having some problems recently too.
Why aren't we talking about the death of Sony anymore?
Did that fad finally wear off?
