I think the main point of all this is that they don't try to make mobile games that are "too big" for mobile. I think it would be fair to assume that onscreen buttons outside of "tap this spot to go fast/jump" is out of the question. And the fact that they said they're working on the NX? Whatever that ends up being, even if it's not a portable, I'm sure they'll still produce portable hardware.

Also you're talking about Brazil and India and there are issues with those places for sure. However it's also true that China has just lifted a ban on game consoles which is a massive market. We're talking about a country that has 4x the population of the US and a massive explosion of wealth in the middle classes. If Nintendo plays their cards right we could end up in a position where the Wii U "loses" the console race but moves a fairly respectable number like 40mill lifetime. And capturing the interest of new markets via smartphone games could be a large part of that.

Again like I said, those who can only get games on smartphones would most likely not be able to get the systems. The whole point of going mobile is to boost Nintendo's hardware and software and if you're only going to have Nintendo games on smartphone but unable to get their actual systems, what's the point? Sure, it gives Nintendo a lot of profit and yes, it can help Nintendo be globally recognized but that doesn't mean a thing when companies like Capcom, Sega and many more have made losses by making games on smartphone.

Even if Nintendo didn't decide to go mobile, they still dominate the handheld market as far as it can go. Its strange that Nintendo announces a new console before the lifespan of either system barely ended.

Also, with Nintendo going mobile, what does that mean to indie devs out there? there won't be a point to make games on Nintendo's systems because seeing how they can make more money through phones and the fact that Nintendo is going to that direction, what's the point?

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

Well for a start the 3DS is far from a new platform so I think it's a mistake to say they're cutting that short. And the Wii U while it's not quite as old would have still had almost a normal lifespan if this is a Wii U successor and it's drawn out to late 2017. So it's not early for either of them and if anything it's ridiculously long for the 3DS if this thing isn't a portable.

Also just because you get Nintendo's IP on your phone doesn't mean that you're going to be completely satisfied with that. I play mobile games from time to time and while good they don't replace a proper gaming experience. Something which I doubt will change. There are a lot of different types of gamers and I'm sure some will settle for just mobile just as they do now. But I don't think the people who had a phone and then got a 3DS will suddenly not get portables because Nintendo is now on mobile. I don't think their mobile games will be replacements for big games like Pokemon, Zelda, Mario, Animal Crossing, Smash and Kart. At most they'll be on par with stuff like Pushmo, Pokemon Shuffle and Dillon's Rolling Western but built specifically for mobile.

As for indies well they are free to put games on mobile and a lot of them still choose to put their ideas on traditional platforms. Sometimes because mobile gamers aren't interesting in paying $5, $10 for a game unless it's a sure thing. Sometimes because their idea won't work on mobile. There are companies like Image and Form who tried mobile but then only really hit it big when they put Steamworld Dig on 3DS. I doubt they'll go back just because Nintendo is starting to make mobile games.

So do you think Mario Maker might be using mobile devices in any way?

Expect the Unexpected... New Nintendo IP or Pikmin 4

Hopefully it's Gamevil in quality. Gamevil is like the best mobile developer.

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

I like Kabam, but I have only played their Marvel Contest of Champions game. I installed their Star Wars game, however I hear it was only ok.

Gamevil is like mobile developer version of Atlus. Their Baseball Superstar series is amazing.

Calling it now: It's going to be that Hudson IP that Konami licensed out to Nintendo.

Calling another surprise. It will launch, at least in beta form on 1 platform, the day they announce it.

We aren't going to get the details of the game through a Direct, are we?

@VeeFlamesNL: I doubt it. Unless it's a really big game, but it somehow doesn't really fit in a ND.
