I feel like the key behind amiibo isn't doing 1 big thing (like Skylanders or Disney Infinity) but doing a lot of small things, which we have already seen evidence of that. I would be interested in using my Amiibo on my phone, just I wonder what they could do.

Quite true regarding the former. As for what kind of game would be used on a phone... I could see a Nintendolike simulation work. Something more than the old Tamagotchi, yet not as expansive as Sims, yet something interconnected like Sims Social.

Something more like Tomodachi Life? You could scan Amiibos for a random piece of furniture themed to the character you scanned, or something.

I still have yet to play Tomodachi Life... is it essentially a Sim-like game? Personally, if they wanted to try a different game, I'd say, instead of creating a "you," you create a character with your amiibo. Each of them have different kinds of yearnings, tendencies, and/or stats (either set to the amiibo or randomized) and have fun from there.

The hearthstone thing sounds like an obvious thing with Ambiio cards being on the way. I'm still shocked that Nintendo never lerverged the pokemon TCG through the DS family or the Wii U.

Yeah I feel like a card game is the easiest and most effective way to advertise their IP and systems.

With a peripheral, this could be a new way to use Amiibos. I don't know how, but there definitely could be a simple game, on the go, with Amiibos that could spread fuse these two products together.

Don't most SmartPhones already have NFC built in now? My Galaxy S3 does and that is a few years old now.

Only the higher end ones, it's very much still seen as an optional feature. Even moreso with tablets which is arguably their bigger market, especially if they want to get a new generation of kids interested in their IP. That said Amiibo compatibility if you happen to have NFC? Genius. It just won't be able to be the main hook....

These smartphone games oughta be packed to the brim with Wii U and 3DS advertisements even though the super casual gamer isn't gonna care as soon as they find out a Wii U/3DS costs over $5.00. I'm telling you guys... I understand the benefits to Nintendo doing this to expand their brand but I would be so shocked if a super casual gamer played a Nintendo smartphone game and suddenly got interested to buy a Wii U/3DS. I just don't see it happening. They might become a super casual Nintendo fan but that's it.

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

The smartphone thing I really don't care about. I'm interested on when were going to hear about the stuff as it pertains too the Nintendo Network and the Club Nintendo successor. I'm hoping we hear details of this alongside a tease of NX at E3 this year.

Anyone else surprised how QOL has seemed to disappeared from Nintendo's lips.

I truly don't know if NFC capability means amiibo capability. but I'm sure the software could compensate [or peripheral]. And no, it won't be the main hook, but I know the youth are enthralled by it already because its a toy. Why not put it to good use? Heck... maybe they'll rerelease old models for new games [though cards seem more likely...]

First attempting to move into healthcare and education with QOL and now they're trying to move into the mobile/tablet space with this. Could this be nintendo trying to expand into a larger business?

Anyway as long as the games are high quality and fun I will be excited to play nintendo games on my tablet without jail breaking it.

I just realised that a lot of the single player games on Nintendo Land would make great mobile games.

and when you think about it further they've always been pretty ahead of mobile crazes. Draw something was a hit a few years ago but that was basically just a slick and more formal version of Pictochat and later Swapnote. Both of which came out before Draw Something. Flappy Bird we complain about but it's basically just a watered down version of Ballon Fight. And if you look at some of the minigames in, for example, New SMB on the DS? I'm sure there are clones of every single one of those on mobile right now. I'm sure someone could name one of them that's massive.

Our Nintendo fan, "real gamer" minds are only interested in the big titles. Which makes us worried about Nintendo dumbing their games down to squeeze them onto mobile. But there's a lot of stuff Nintendo has already done that fits mobile REALLY well and in many case was there before mobile and possible even did it better. Better than crazes that have been sold for hundreds of millions as a one-off thing.

So... everyone talks about smart devices...
...yet this pic clearly includes "PC." Does that mean they will be making PC games as well, or just ported games from smart devices?

My guess was that it would be in the same way that a lot of "mobile" games also appear on PC. Like Hearthstone, Candy Crush etc, etc. Maybe even some sort of PC version of the eShop in the same way that UPlay, Origin and Steam work. I don't think it's worth reading too much into it especially not to the extend that people have with the NX. As if somehow the fact that the number of things on there suggest it's a "third pillar".

I think the PC just means they want to use PC as a portal into Nintendo, with Miiverse and eShop purchases already on PC they will probably just expand on those idas for PC

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

That was my immediate thought playing those games. I mean, it makes sense, it's a replayable small game on a tablet controller, so it's not surprising.

All that slide says is that the new membership service will be available on PCs as well as smartphones/tablets and dedicated consoles, probably allowing all platforms to interact with one another. It says nothing about game development on PCs.

I'm going to guess which games will come to mobile:

Nintendo Land minigames
Mario Party/Wii Party
Mario Endless Runner
Wii Sports
Kirby title (maybe Fighters Deluxe?)

I will update this when Half Life 3 arrives. [Started 17/11/2015]

I'd go with lesser known or not as popular franchises on mobile. I'm willing to bet that games that underperform will be sent to the mobile market as well. I can see Dr Mario on a mobile phone. Reintroduce the Game & Watch series. The pokemon mystery dungeon series and so on. Those games that didn't do well financially can do well on a mobile market while leaving all the heavy hitters on the console. A chance to give these sort of games new life.

A sequel to Kirby tumble would be interesting to see. Granted, that really depends on how good the gyroscope is on everyone's smart devices... but adding touch screen would be a nice... touch >_>

ok here's the problem when Nintendo goes mobile. Say that Brazil a country Nintendo no longer supports, gets Nintendo games on smartphones. They are happy with that and that's fine. Now let's say that Nintendo decides to port some console game on the smartphone even though they clearly said that they won't port games to it. Brazil will get a poor man's version of the game whereas we get the definitive version of it. Won't that hurt Brazil a lot? Its bad enough that some games aren't localized every where like for Super Mario Bros Deluxe or the New 3DS, but having a poor man's version of a game is simply hurting the consumers no matter what you think of.

Like I said, I know that they won't port games but simply having games that aren't as good or even memorable as the systems will hurt a lot of those who have smartphones because of where Nintendo markets their products on. Like what about India? do they only get smartphone games and not the actual systems.

Another thing I'm concerned about is the button layout. I don't like the idea of virtual buttons on a touchscreen because I want to see the screen. The DS also had the issue but since you use a stylus and not a finger to touch it, it makes it easy to control and see. But that's not the case here on smartphones.

I've yet to get a smartphone myself but I know these issues will bother the hell out of me when playing Sonic 1 and 2 remastered (funny how these two don't get a PC port but Sonic CD does. ).

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

^it will show Nintendo that certain regions want their games and Nintendo should chase those regions. If a Smart Phone games based on a new series is released and it does terrible in the US they may not port it to the US. The Smart Phone business could help Nintendo focus their efforts on those that want their games.

@Artwark
I think the main point of all this is that they don't try to make mobile games that are "too big" for mobile. I think it would be fair to assume that onscreen buttons outside of "tap this spot to go fast/jump" is out of the question. And the fact that they said they're working on the NX? Whatever that ends up being, even if it's not a portable, I'm sure they'll still produce portable hardware.

Also you're talking about Brazil and India and there are issues with those places for sure. However it's also true that China has just lifted a ban on game consoles which is a massive market. We're talking about a country that has 4x the population of the US and a massive explosion of wealth in the middle classes. If Nintendo plays their cards right we could end up in a position where the Wii U "loses" the console race but moves a fairly respectable number like 40mill lifetime. And capturing the interest of new markets via smartphone games could be a large part of that.
