Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto has shed light on why the Japanese giant overlooked the prospect of full online capabilities in its home consoles for so long. He added that Nintendo now sees ‘tremendous possibilities’ in the online arena and is looking at exploring them moving forward.

Speaking with the NY Times, Miyamoto reflected on Nintendo’s handling of online possibilities in the past.

“For a long time at Nintendo we didn’t focus as much on online play,” he explained, “because for many years doing so would have limited the size of the audience that could enjoy those features. But certainly now we see that so many people are connected to the Internet. It opens up a tremendous amount of possibilities.”

Speaking about the Wii U’s online future, Miyamoto added “We really view it as being the ideal device that families are going to want to have connected to that screen in the living room that everyone is going to gather around and watch. Certainly in the short term I would want to see it performing with probably a little more momentum. I think in the long term I’m not at a point where I’m concerned yet.”

Meanwhile, Miyamoto has expressed disappointment in Pikmin 3′s delay, stating that he;d hoped to launch the game alongside Wii U. Find out what happened here:

It's good but not great. I can imagine it would get better later as the Wii U receives its updates. I'm sure it will work better by the time games like Mario Kart U release.
