The best deal for Sony at this point really. The series is in decline and the way they planned on 'expanding' the Spidey universe just did not sound like it would work at all. A crossover with the Avengers would the perfect way to get the public excited for the reboot of the reboot and effortlessly expand the universe.
sigh Now if only Marvel could pry the Fantastic 4 out of FOX's clueless hands... (I have given up on X-men).
I believe they secured the rights specifically for the 3rd Captain America movie, Civil War. It was going to be hard to tell that bit of mythos without him.

Finally!
I'm betting he's a lock for Cap 3, but maybe we'll get a brief cameo (or maybe a quick post-credits bit) in Avengers 2. They wouldn't even need to have Garfield film anything, they could just do a long shot of Spidey swinging by, and maybe have Garfield just do a line or two via ADR.
To everybody cheering "they got the rights back to marvel FINALLY YES OMG!", they didn't.
Sony still has the movie rights. That means the still will distribute it on theaters, produce it, do the marketing, home video rights and even have final cut control. This is just a partnership to get in the Avengers bandwagon.
And if anybody thinks that Xmen or FF are next: DOFP made almost a billion and judging a movie for its teaser is just stupid.
Get rid of hipster (Amazing Spider Man) and emo (Spider Man 3) spider man and I'll be happy (well, happier). I'm kind of sick of super hero movies, and Sony's most recent bumbling of them sure doesn't help.

Don't think so. Civil War is due out May 2016, just over a year from now, and is set to go into full production pretty soon. They won't have a new Spidey ready to go by then, especially with Sony retaining creative control. His new movie is due out in 2017, and I think that's the first we'll see of him.
They can do Civil War with no Spider-Man, the same way they can do Ultron with no Ant-Man or Guardians of the Galaxy with no Adam Warlock. They just have to change whatever doesn't work. Comic books aren't exactly a textbook. You can change whatever you want with little to no issue.
@minotaurgamer None of us ever said Marvel got the movie rights back. Merchandising for Spider Man remains with Marvel. Sony only has the movie rights. However, they only get final say over Spider Man content - as in, they do not get any say over other Marvel characters within the same movie. This is still a major step in the right direction. Marketing is obviously shared for any movie that has Spidey as well as another Marvel character.
This is such good news! Hopefully they get more than just Spidey in there. I really like Spidey's villains (especially the Green Goblin) and the secondary characters (Gwen, Mary, May, Ben etc.).
@CaviarMeths They said that Spidey will appear in some MCU movie before the 2017 standalone movie. It's likely Civil War.
Just took a closer look at the press release, you're right. Not sure how I missed that. Yeah, it's almost certainly Civil War.
Concerning: Avi Arad is still being named as an executive producer. That man is comic book movie cancer. Oh well. Executive producer typically just means bankroll anyway. Looks like Amy Pascal and Matt Feige will have creative control.
They were planning on bringing Spider-Man into Cap America 3 for a while, but when that deal didn't pan out several months ago, it sounded like they were getting ready to move on without him.
I wonder if there is still time for them to make him an important part of the film (since it's starting production soon) or if he's included now, will it be in a smaller cameo role? I don't think they will delay this movie as they want it to go against Batman vs Superman, but I would hate for them to just stick Spider-Man into the film now and rush the movie if he won't fit into the current script.
