Activision-Blizzard just bought King, the makers of Candy Crush Saga, for $5.9 billion. Completely out of left field.

For reference, Microsoft bought Mojang (Minecraft) for $2.5 billion, and Disney bought Lucasfilm (Star Wars, Indiana Jones) for $4 billion.

Two things I take from this.

First off, I am shocked that a video game company has more spending money then Disney does and spent more money on King then Disney did on Marvel and Star Wars, two other powerful brands in their own right.

Second, Activision is bound and determined to become the largest game developer and publisher in the world. EA might just be knocked off its throne, and Ubisoft better give up its dreams of ever getting there.

@Caryslan: To be fair, Marvel was on the brink of bankruptcy before the Disney buy out. As for Star Wars, well I think Lucas wanted to finally be rid of it. Still, shock value there.

Agreed on the second point. They have CoD, Skylanders, WoW, Hearthstone, etc already. This just adds to it. Not so much Candy Crush, but the game's userbase. That's what they wanted - the userbase.

Just goes to show that what we think are the things that are worth a lot and what is actually worth a lot are entirely different things. Anyways, if you look at the revenue that they're raking in? It's easy to understand why it's worth as much as it is.

I think Disney got an absolute bargain with Star Wars. The merch alone for The Force Awakens will probably make more than they paid, without accounting for ticket sales.

[EDIT] Accounting, not account!

Wow, just... unbelievable.
But by comparison, this is a killer deal for Activision. King (and Candy Crush Saga in particular) makes millions each day off of idiots, and now Activision has more idiots to rip off than their own IP's could ever provide them with.
But hey, this might be a good sign. Maybe they can put King on a leash so they stop stealing ideas only to then sue the original creators.

It makes sense for Activision to buy a mobile games producer to try and get the Skylanders and Guitar Hero brands to a new audience, plus invest in a company to save a bit on tax for their current profits.

Not sure if they could make Phone Call of Duty though.

5.9 billion for a Bejewled clone?

@Jason723: Yeah, that's what really surprised me. Is it really that much? Also, does King still own the rights to the word candy, or what?

Wow... I am starting to feel like I don't understand this industry anymore.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

@shaneoh Well yes, but they also got the word "candy".

Our teacher said today: "If a couple of Swedish guys can do it, then you can too." and "If someone comes to your door and says he wants to give you a big amount of money, you don't close the door, you say: Interesting, tell me more." He teaches us mobile game programming. I'm not really a guy who wants to make mobile games but it could be a great starting platform (as well as Steam) before moving onto consoles.

It's its, not it's.

King had revenue of $2.1 billion in the year that just ended in September. So at that rate it will take them 2 1/2 years to earn their money back. Not a bad investment. And if mobile gaming increases 20% this year, to be worth more than consoles, they could be worth even more.

Relevant paragraph to users of this site:

"One new milestone: Apple’s game revenues could be double those of Nintendo this year. Apple is expected to generate $4 billion in revenue from games sold in its iTunes App Store, while Google could generate $3 billion in revenue in 2014. Last year, Nintendo’s revenues were $2.4 billion, and the total is expected to be smaller this year."

People keep talking about Apple buying Nitneod. But why? Though I suppose if Apple's marketing team got a hold of Mario and Link we'd be living in a "Nintendo World" world, but the games would only exist on mobile. And Apple TV.

Mobile. Because that's where the money is.

I really wish this mobile craze would just blow over. Smart business decisions aside, mobile gaming is so irritating to me.

Agreed on Marvel and Star Wars. Put in this context, it looks like they overpaid. Plus, I think Candy Crush is just a fad- will go the way of other games like Farmville, Angry Birds, Mafia Wars etc. Granted, maybe they will be able to do something with their other IPs or IPs in development.
