this is sweet. if it's true, nintendo fanboys will be able to look down on the PS3 and 360 for being less powerful than a handheld. oh how the tides will turn...

So, this is to further discuss the rumor news post?
I believe it's almost certainly a case of hyperbole by quoting. The original IGN article says that a developer has stated the 3DS has "abilities that are close to HD consoles such as PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360." Even if true, that doesn't mean that this developer is saying it will be generally as powerful as either of those systems. It might just mean, for instance, that some of its graphical capabilities are closer in nature to those systems than to existing Nintendo systems, perhaps in terms of shaders or whatever components qualitatively set those systems apart from the Wii's Gamecube-on-steroids architecture.

the idea isn't that it's going to look like the PS3 or xbox, it's just that because it has to render two images at once for the 3D effect that even with gamecube level graphics it'll wind up taking a near PS3 level of power to pull it off.

Which in turn means high price and low battery life?

IGN just spews random crap for attention.
If this is true though, than I hope it is not around $400.

Oh it will be more powerful than the Wii.....But closer to the PS3/360? Not too sure. But again for the millionth time, the PSP2 'will' most likely be closer to the PS3/360 in terms of Power. I don't think Nintendo will pull another typical upgrade concerning graphics as if jumping from the N64(DS) to the GCN. They know they have to take it further. Innovation is obviously the most important, but Sony and MS are dipping into the Motion Controls pond and they all wan't a big piece of the pie...Hell expect the PSP2 to have '2' touch screen screens, graphics that are of a weaker PS3 and who knows what else. Nintendo has to come out with guns a' blazing and they can and they will. After all, they've made an insane killing with the Wii and DS in terms of sales and they easily have the money to back it up this time. They're back on top again after all.
This time, they're going to up the ante with everything, not just innovation. So being more powerful than the Wii? I definintly think so....I think these rumors may actually be true in terms of being closer to the PS3/360....but I definitly don't think too close, more like a tad watered down. But down right amazing and a bigger and further step for Nintendo instead of the norm.
~3D~Larger HD Screens~Widescreens~Superior than Wii 'graphics' More like a watered down PS3~Rumble feedback~Motion Sensor controls~DS Compaitable~Handheld Virtual Console? I'm thinking most likely.

I think the whole "graphics close to PS3/360" thing will boil down to a GCN or Wii graphical output but on a lower resolution screen. I mean, look at PSP games' graphics. It's roughly on par with the PS2, but on the much smaller screen they look a hell of a lot better than any PS2 game. And some of the better looking DS games start to creep towards Gamecube-quality graphics (albeit Gamecube low-quality graphics, we're talking compared to some of the lower budget 3rd-party titles. Not trying to say anything on DS looks like Twilight Princess)
