I'm late on this but this late-August info dump has been a thing for the past several years. Even last year when there was a Japanese direct there was still a big press release for the west just a week or two later.
@WebHead: I also agree but also the Smash ballot results being a key thing. The big question surrounding Smash at the moment is "Is the Shovel Knight rumour correct?".
@Grumblevolcano: I imagine we'd only find out about 1 or 2 characters. I seriously doubt we'll know all of the characters that are picked from the Ballot in October. Gotta keep that hype going through Spring 2016.
Anyways, I think this past week was a significant turning point for Nintendo. It marked the end of the Summer of Splatoon (there's still content rolling out though!) and the beginning of the future. From Monday's announcement of Pikmin 4 onward through the end of this year and all of next year, it's going to be some significant times for Nintendo.
Just this past week we've seen the random announcement of Pikmin 4, The Pokemon Company's announcement of mobile game Pokemon Go, and the launch of Super Mario Maker to celebrate Super Mario's 30th anniversary. Now we've got CoroCoro scans revealing Zygarde's new formes, so Pokemon Z or whatever should be announced in the next couple days.
Over the next month or two we've got several game launches, the complete end of Club Nintendo, the end of the Smash Ballot & the next DLC wave, the announcement of the new CEO (hopefully), the unveiling of the new membership service, and the reveal + launch of Nintendo's first mobile game with DeNA. Then there's the rest of the holiday season to finish out the year. Let's not forget the return of Nintendo Direct somewhere in there!
2016 is gonna be a major time period as it will see the unveiling of NX + possible launch in combination with the celebration of Pokemon's 20th anniversary and Zelda's 30th anniversary. Who knows, maybe they'll even do something for Metroid's 30th? There's also gonna be more game launches for 3DS and Wii U and the next 3 DeNA mobile games.

I'm guessing a September 30th Direct. It's a Wednesday, there's Smash DLC released on that day (Super Mario Maker) and Club Nintendo is completely over after that day.
Really need a Direct soon... I feel like the stars are aligned for a Sept. 30th Direct.
>Super Mario Maker stage DLC for Smash releases that day
>Smash Ballot ends on Saturday
>Kimishima named new Nintendo president
>Club Nintendo completely ends after that day
>New membership service still needs to be unveiled, is supposed to be revealed and launched in Fall 2015 (though that might have changed for obvious reasons)
>First DeNA mobile game needs announced
>Pikmin 4 needs revealed

>There's a Super Blood Moon
