Topic: TV Mode for Switch with a different USB type C cable than one included

Hey everyone! I just came home from college and didn't bother bringing my official AC adapter for the Nintendo switch because I have plenty of other USB type C cable and various AC wall adapters like the ones for iPhone and others of the sort. So I got home and hooked switch up to TV but it won't go into tv Mode, I get an error message on the switch tablet telling me that I need to use the official AC adapter included in the switch box to go into TV mode. I came to the forums because I literally seem to be the only one with this issue on the internet! I was wondering if anyone else had this issue and if it is true that the only way to play TV mode is with the official Nintendo AC adapter. The switch charges fine with the cable I have when in handheld mode. It just won't output to TV.

Cause everyone else knows it only works with the official dock for TV mode. 😆

It can charge from other USB C cables (though I'd check voltage and amps- iPhone charger only does 5V 1A which will barely trickle any charge into Switch. You want at least 5V 2.4A, preferably 5V 3A with USBC to USBC. But ya, sorry, only the dock can send the signal to the TV

Just a hunch, but the Switch uses more power in docked mode than a phone. Thus a mobile charger doesn't provide enough power for the switch to function.

@JaxonH I am using the official dock, just not the official AC adapter. The AC adapter I am using is 100-240 V so I'm not sure why it won't work

Oh ok, my mistake.

Alright. New theory. Switch charger has dual voltage, and while docked it draws 15V 2.6A. Your charger won't do that. Most chargers do 5V tops. The voltage you listed isn't the output voltage. You gotta look for where it says something like 5V 2.4A. But there's little point because 15V is extremely rare and only achieved via Power Delivery, which very few devices use.

@JaxonH Ok thanks! Looks like I'm SOL but thankfully I can still play the thing in handheld until I get back.
