Hi,

I just got my switch, brand new last week. I completely drained the battery for the first time two nights ago. Today, I plugged it in with the included AC adapter and left it to charge for 4 hours. Aftrerward, when I went to to turn it on, it was unresponsive. The screen remains completely black.

I attempted a "hard reset" several times but the screen does not change. However, if I hold the HOME button, the switch will sometime lightly pulse/vibrate momentarily

To my surprise, the switch is fully functional when hooked up the tv in the dock. The battery percentage at 100% on the tv screen but the percentage is not visible on the screen of the switch itself as it is still fully black.

Even the power button works while the switch is in the dock, if I press it the switch turns off so the button itself seems to but functional.

I search online (including nintendo of America) and couldn't find anything about this particular issue (screen not working in handheld/ switch working fine in dock)

I hope someone can give me some advice. I really love playing in hand held mode and this is my first ever gaming console.

@Maggiemackenzie i would call Nintendo support. If it's defective it's still under warranty

I would second this. If it's defective under warranty, then Nintendo's support will repair or replace it at no additional cost.

Once had a DS Lite with a defective A button (kart kept stopping in Mario Kart when held down), and they replaced it. Nintendo support usually does a good job, and generally the reps are actually nice and helpful.

@Maggiemackenzie I think this happens from time to time for some people? Although it's not common. Check out these two Nintendo support pages. They may be relevant to solving your issue. (Both links address resetting the AC adapter, but the outcome options at the bottom of the pages may differ.)

Hopefully it doesn't come to this, but, if you never find a solution, your issue could indicate a hardware failure, which would require repair, which obviously sucks. BUT, you did just buy the Switch. With a newly bought product, you could talk to the store (preferably the manager) and ask to exchange for a new one. Some managers want to keep you happy, and may replace the Switch. But, if you do replace the switch, you will have to transfer your save files (animal crossing progress, however, cannot be transfered to another console)

@Sunsy So I did call Nintendo, and they were very nice and helpful. However, they won't be able to service it for 3-4 months due to COVID-19
