Hey everybody! My wife and I just bought super smash bros for our 64 and cant wait to play. But i'm having trouble getting any picture or sound at all on my HDTV. The A/V cable does not work but i'm not surprised since the digital age. Unless i did something wrong but i tried all the usual channels.
I am using an s video cable (red white yellow) that is plugged into an adaptor on the tv which is then plugged into a green input. all my tv has are 5 HDMI plugs but it came with the s video colored cable adaptor.

Any ideas or am I doomed because my tv doesn't have just straigh S-Video inputs? Any help would be appreciative! even if it's bad news. I need closure. haha. Thanks!

Are you getting any picture or video at all? It could be the contacts on the system or game(s) are just dirty.

Nope. When i first turn it on i see a white line blip happen but it stays black screen. and then a box on the tv floats around that says: "Check connection, input and signal etc." and it doesn't go away. I'm using the component video cable also ps not the s video. (red yellow white). i tried a few different games.

Retro consoles need to be hooked up to a CRT TV. There is no way around it.

Then I wonder how I'm managing to play all my classic consoles, including my Atari, perfectly fine on my HDTV. I must have magical powers.

Of course you do @the_shpydar you are the_shpydar after all.

Seriously though now that I am not on my phone I can elaborate more. Yes you can hook up an older console like an N64 to an HDTV would you though probably not. For one thing the coloring just looks off on an HDTV second you have horrible lag to contend with as well. Anyway you can pick up a CRT TV dirt cheap nowadays from thrift stores, garage sales, flea markets etc. They usually go for at the most $30. That's why whenever I have the extra money and I see one and if it's good I will usually by one so that way I can keep on retro gaming the way those systems and games are meant to be played.

I am sure that @Waveboy will be around anytime to comment on this.

@westernblade without seeing your cables / connectors it's really hard to determine the problem.

All (most) modern TVs will have the ability to accept older signal types like composite and s-video, its just getting them hooked up right.

Do you have some photos of the cables / connectors?
