Topic: Lost Switch Cartridge

Please help! My 8 year old son took his switch to a friend's house and the Zelda BOTW cartridge came up missing (surprise!!). Except, I've been playing the game and was 3/4 of the way through it. I've heard that all of the progress is actually saved on console, not the cartridge. If I buy a new cartridge, I've heard that I will be able to pick up where I left off. My question is, would that be true if I buy a download instead of a new cartridge? Or, will it overwrite my progress so far with a new download?

@ericvennon buy another and you should be fine

We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.

@1UP_MARIO but do I have to buy another cartridge or can I buy the download from the eshop and still be able to pick up where I left off?

@ericvennon yes you could. 100% guarantee. Just make sure it’s the same region game.

And dont forget about updating the game (the digital version should be already updated)

@ericvennon That's true. Switch game save data is saved on the console, no on the cartridge. So, you can lose & replace a cartridge without loosing BOTW progress as many times as you like

You can also buy BOTW digitially and resume the game. As posted above, it looks like that's the route you took. That works!

So by the looks of it, the answer is 'yes, you can buy a new copy of the game and continue to play where you left off.' I don't think this topic needs to be revived.
