I've been struggling with the fights in the final dungeon of the game (venus lightgouse) and was wondering if I was underlevelled. At the moment, all my party are at level 27. Do I need to level up more? If the answer is yes, what level would you reccomend and what would be a good way to level grind at this point?

If it's your first time playing you should really be at Level 32 for those final battles, so yes, you should level a bit. Have you done the Lunpa Village sidequest to free Master Hammet? That should help you level up/get better equipment/find Djinni... otherwise you can try the Crossbone Isle trials as well.

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.

This is off-topic, but i'm always severely underleveled in every RPG i play, and still manage to beat them somehow, barely and sweating. I just don't want to spend hours for leveling. Also, why some people are considering those who over-level their characters better players? What's the skill, challenge or drama if you can one- shot Sephiroth?

What does it matter to you if someone chooses to over-level? Some people get enjoyment just with the atmosphere of the battles, not rushing through. I personally don't get enjoyment out of getting my butt kicked nearly every battle. RPGs I like to take my time, but I'm not naive enough to think that everyone gets enjoyment out of the game in the same way that I do. And you kind of jumped to one extreme where someone one shots the final boss. Come on now.

I think that if you can beat them in a couple of hits, it isn't as fun. For example, if you can do that, you won't spend time looking for weaknesses. I defeated a T-rex boss in FFV. It took me a while and then I understood- wait he is undead- I blasted him with a Phoenix Down. BLAM. He dead.
