Topic: Youtubers upset over Nintendo's New affiliate program

Talk about kneejerk reactions. Look guys, we don't know what Nintendo is aiming to do with this. It is very possible that Nintendo is simply looking to extend an option out to creators to partner directly with them.

I'm not gonna say they aren't going to abuse it, because it's very possible they will, but if they do, it's more likely that one or both of the following will happen:
1. Creators stop using Nintendo games
2. A creator with enough money gets fed up and sues Nintendo.

Also, though this is unlikely, it is possible Nintendo has worked out a deal with YouTube to get a bigger cut.

I think it's pretty simple to me. If you're not getting ad revenue, I think Nintendo should just consider it no-harm no-foul and not get too excited (I agree there). But if youtubers are pulling down money (sometimes lots of money) then I think they need to suck it up. Too many youtubers have WAY too much money thrown in their face to just play OTHER people's games and scream like a girl. Youtubers can whine like children all they want (BIG surprise), but if they made a game would they be happy if someone else was profitting off it...yeaaaaaaaah, no. They'd whine even harder (even BIGGER surprise).

Stuff like this brings the true colors of some folks out. If only I could count the greedy ones who stop playing Nintendo games because of "their" money...

I wish them the best of luck for that. Unfortunately it may not hold water

I said it so many times before and I'll say it again: You also don't have to get paid for making a Youtube video.

I'm sure they would be happy if someone was profiting off of their transformative gameplay. For the same reason Chamillionaire, Kurt Cobain, and Don McLean are happy that Weird Al profits off of parodies of their songs. Not only is it boosting their own publicity, it's an indication that people love what they have done so much that they are willing to make a living off of it.

In a more broader, philosophical perspective, you cannot own an idea. Ideas are something that are free flowing, and many of our decisions and thoughts are based on the ideas of others. Hell, Metroid was inspired by Alien, Zelda was inspired by Peter Pan, and Mario was inspired by Pop-eye. The idea that collection of ideas are someone's private property is one that severely limits creativity. That's not to say copyrights are necessarily bad, as their original purpose was to encourage creative work by granting the creator temporary exclusivity to their creative work. Unfortunately, it has grown to something like 50 years+ the life of the creator, and it's now used to ensure an extra buck for companies.

Yes, but right now, with it untested in court, publishers have an advantage. They can allow and disallow work purely via their own interests. They know that legally speaking, it's a lot grayer, so they could lose that control.

EDIT: Also, I didn't think about this, but with Nintendo getting in on the affiliate market, if they restrict revenue from content on non Nintendo-partnered channels, it may give other YouTube affiliates a push to either take their own legal action or assist creators.

Well I think it also boils down to this: if they don't like it, don't make videos. The fans will still probably continue making Nintendo videos.

Does Nintendo even need these youtubers when several larger channels already show off the games?

I already explained this on the article here, so I won't repe...

It really does seem that nobody understands this system and/or wants all the money. YouTube's crappy system makes such a thing impossible, they want to go under the "consistent defense" rule of copyright law where you either go after everybody or lose your rights.
Some people want Nintendo to do a 90/10 revenue cut as a partner, which absolutely noone (except for maybe Curse) does.

And, like Lz said... "You also don't have to get paid for making a Youtube video."

Either way, I'll still be using this system when I (eventually) make gaming videos. Hopefully the posers and the fronts will be weeded out by then.

You don't, but if you want to do it for a living, you do. And I'd argue that certain LPers are good enough at what they do that it's totally fine for that to be their living.

Chuggaconroy is a really good example, as he puts hours into making sure every LP he makes is informative. The outbursts and comments are definitely what gives them their unique flare, but the balance with really well presented information is what really makes them good.

In my opinion, if people are willing to pay to put advertisements on YouTube videos, then the person who provides the video should get a cut of the revenue. How much is up for debate, though.

I disagree. You are working for money no one has to give to you. That's like saying someone has to get paid for freelancing without any sort of contract

I don't think it matters what your opinion is. I mean I never do clearly () but it doesn't matter. Pretty much anyone has made money from Youtube and Nintendo already. At most, they've had to make some minor pitch changes on the music, but they're making money and will continue to make money without using this anyway. So getting mad at this is entirely pointless. Nothing has changed.

I am mad because I am seeing ads on just about every dang Youtube video now. I wonder when this whole revenue will crash on everyone and ad companies decide to stop paying.

Almost forgot. More and more channels have been replacing ad revenue with Patreon, so again, this is a non-issue nowadays.

My main problems is it can be robbing you of an experience of playing the game itself. To me it is like taking a movie and posting your commentary track over it and then posting it online and making money off of it. Games are meant to be played through, and just watching them through as if they are a movie can devalue the games industry as it may make the bean counters think that is what Video Games should be slightly interactive movies.

If I ever do Let's Plays on YouTube, it won't be for Nintendo games. Worrying about fees and such just doesn't seem like it'd be worth it.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.
