Hey guys, I was just inspired to start this thread after hearing recent rumours that former co-stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, from The X Files, were in a relationship, this boded excitement within me because i'm a huge fan of The X Files and I'm kind of a Sci Fi nut myself (to an extent).
As you may've heard, the co-stars who play the Alien Conspiracy/Supernatural investigating duo Fox Mulder and Dana Scully are rumoured to be in a relationship, but nobody has yet to make a serious yes or no answer as to the truth of the situation.
What does this news have to do with my favourite TV show (possibly of all time)? EVERYTHING. First off, if you don't know anything about The X Files (and if you don't and you love Sci Fi, Shame on you!), the series basically revolves around two FBI agents, one a former crimes investigative/special area-ish agent whos life was changed when his sister was abducted by Extraterestrials as a child, which spun his interest into the paranormal and second, a former medical school student with a M.D. medical degree, who accepted a job offer with the FBI, in order to distinguish herself, though with the FBI her original purpose was to debunk Agent Mulders work.
Long story short, each week there's a "Monster of the week" episode, where they investigate supernatural going ons, freaks, mad scientists, etc and then there's the main Mytharc episodes in-between, which revolves around Mulder and scully investigating the enormous conspiracy around aliens, the abduction of Samantha mulder, the "Syndicate" and various other related subjects.

I first saw this programme only about four years ago, as reruns on our paid satelite/cable TV. While I'm not an original fan of the series this is in part due to the fact the series first started only about a year after I was born, so that would've been difficult to pull off if I was an original fan. However, my interest started back before this news of the rumoured relationship of the co-stars, so I might seem like i'm trying to be all hipsterish but i'm not. I genuinely love this series to pieces, and people where I live don't really seem to be into sci fi tv shows that much, which is a shame, but i'm into the genre 100%, just however i'm not really a huge TV fan, i'm more into watching Sci Fi flicks more than anything, but if (in the future) there any more great series like The X Files, i'm bound to watch them. I currently trying waiting to find a copy of season 6 to watch AGAIN for like the third time and I love the first 6 seasons, the seventh was ok but it started to deteriate after that because David Duchovny left the series after the eigth season (I can't be sure now, the later seasons are the least i've watched of and you know why) and only did a decent amount of cameos after that to fill in his character.
While the series didn't end well, it was and is still one of the best shows ever created and if you want to start watching, go ahead, I'd begin at the beginning, the first season is good but it gets tons better until season 8 of course.
Apart from The X Files, my other favourite Sci-Fi shows are Fringe and Doctor Who, both I watch and enjoy nearly just as much as The X Files. Please share with me if you like The X files and Share with us below, your fav Sci Fi show!

I love me some Firefly, Futurama, The Twilight Zone, Cowboy Bebop and Doctor Who. The X-Files, Star Trek: TNG, Planetes, Trigun and Battlestar Galactica are among my favorites too.

Gun to my head? Cowboy Bebop is my choice, although Futurama would still cause a second of internal deliberation.

I liked The X Files back when it was on the air, and I did like the first movie, but by the time the second came out it'd been so long since I'd seen any of the series that I couldn't get back into it. I've got fond memories of hanging out at AOL's area for us X-Philes, haha :3

That said, my favorite sci-fi series are Star Trek, Star Wars (yes, it's not a TV show, but it still counts as a major sci-fi franchise IMO), Stargate (any of them, but especially Atlantis~), FarScape (i loved it while it was on, but i still haven't seen all of it D: ), and Futurama if it counts. I also enjoyed the original Battlestar Galactica (i couldn't get into the new one, though), and I did watch some Babylon 5 when I was younger, but idk, it just doesn't work for me nowadays. there's probably plenty more I'm forgetting, so don't hold this to me as a final list of sci-fi stuff i like, haha :3

Star Wars tends to be considered as a fantasy film series by people who care more about cataloguing stuff by genre than even I do. It's a pretty convincing argument though - aside from the fact it's set in the future it's a story about magic and fantastic locations, and there's very little "science" in it - especially the first trilogy.

But I digress. It's hybrid enough for me.

I completely agree with Star Trek. Love that show (all series), and I'm also a pretty big fan of Stargate SG-1. The other Stargate's never clicked with me though.

My absolute favourite is the (new) Battlestar Galactica for how low-power Sci Fi it is, and I have recently discovered Terra Nova, which I'm rather enjoying.

Aviator

Star Wars is a western (and a sci-fi).

@Waltz, @navi: If we're classing The X-Files as science fiction, we can class Star Wars as science fiction. Besides, the original trilogy has way more focus on ships, robots/mechanical devices, and the technology to encase people within substances than the prequel trilogy (which i do my very best to ignore on a daily basis u___u).

I liked Firefly and Battlestar Galactica.
If Futurama counts, I guess I'll say that.
The original Star Wars trigilogy was great. Not so much the second.
