Topic: Your Favorite Series 25 Years from Now

As a fan of Zelda since the first one, I never imagined the series would end up where it is now. Few on-going series are as long-lived as this one, and 25 years isn't really that long a time. Barring any apocalyptic events, it's possible on my 100th birthday there will be yet another new legend to add to the series (with or without the aid of Miyamoto's brain uploaded into a computer using the technology of the future), and I find it impossible to imagine what shape such a game could take.

So let's imagine just 25 years down the road. Where will our favorite series be by then? I'll kick things off with my own forecast.

Smash Brothers now has all 10,000 Pokemon on the character roster. They are considering maybe adding a new Metroid character next time. Captain Falcon's final smash is changed. He now yells Faaaalcooon Unemployment!, at which point all other characters become embarrassed and walk off the stage. This move does not work against Metaknight, however, as when you select Metaknight the game bypasses the actual match and goes straight to the victory screen. Sakurai says he isn't making another Smash Brothers after this one, for serious this time.

After several unsuccessful third-party spin-offs in which Fox McCloud tries platforming, fishing, and ballet, a puzzled Nintendo decides to just remake Star Fox 64 again. The game receives a slight graphical update and is released to nothing but praise. Nintendo, pleased with the results, is already thinking of the next Star Fox, rumored to be a fitness game.

Mario Kart: Triple Dash!!! draws inspiration from Double Dash but adds a third character who automatically fires blue shells when you get in first place to make the game fair.

The Pokemon series continues to explore new territory with Pokemon Blazing Fire Red, a remake of Pokemon Fire Red, itself a remake of Pokemon Red.

And last but not least, the latest entry in the cult favorite Pikmin series is full of new features. It is tentatively being called Pikmin 3.

Sonic will be selling like hotcakes and Mario is forgotten.

25 years from now is a long time, but I can easily see Final Fantasy IV being re-released for the nth time. Only this time they'll have inserted scenes of Mog taking a bath, replaced all the weapons with walkie-talkies, and the people of the Village of Mist will have attacked the package that Cecil and Kain deliver so that it'll look justified when the monsters emerge and kill them all.

(and then a few years later, the devs will come out and say it was a mistake to have made all those changes and for everyone to go back to previous iterations of the game. there, all better~)

25 years from now...

Having been ported to every other system in existence, Cave Story+- (Plus Minus) will be ported to those fancy Japanese toilets with screens, coming full-circle. This version will contain approximately one room not present in the other versions, forcing fans to collect 'em all to get the full experience.

After Runner 2, Gaijin will make sequels for the rest of the games, eventually compiling them in the collections Complete 2: Future Compilation of Rhythm Alien, and Saga 2, one of which will be full of awesome bonus content and appear on a home console, while the other will be a barebones straight port to a handheld.

Nintendo, fearing going out of business, sells out to Apple and begins making iPhone games, including Angry Mario (in which Bowser steals Peach, making Mario mad and forcing him to launch himself at goombas inside Bowser's castles), Cut the Wario (in which Wario makes use of his Wario Waft move from Smash Bros. Brawl once again), and Tiny Loftwings (in which Link rides Lowftwings as far as he can to get the high score). All three are multimillion sellers.

I've no doubt 25 years from now I'll be defencing Final Fantasy XXIII from people who wish the series was still like the "good old days." I.E Final Fantasy VI. Despite that game having its 13th remake in the same year.

And then after typing the long argument I'll need to rub arthritis cream on my fingers to ease the blinding pain.

I see that in 25 years, Waltz will have learned nothing from all his experience arguing opinions against fanboys.

Just 25 years? I doubt I'll learn in the next 50.

In fact I'm pretty sure arguing with fanboys will be what causes the heart attack that kills me. It'll probably be explaining that Robot Love Plus is not a perverted game.

25 years from now:

The Sims 1000
The game is so glitched it won't even start!
But knowing us sim-players, we HAVE to get a taste of the game
We all buy tons of copies, hoping it will work, making it the best selling game for PC again

This time, there are millions of expansion packs:

The Sims 1000: Stuff Noone Wants to do

The Sims 1000: Ha! We Just Wanted to See How Addicted You Were!
(adds nothing)

The Sims 1000: Little Computer People
(is jam-packed with a computer game for your sims! Now you spend hours worrying about their needs, while they worry about their sims needs)

25 years from now, motion controls will be retro, and virtual reality will be the new thing.

Zelda will now be performed in actual 1:1 movements, and you die in 2 hits seeing that humans don't really have much resistance to giant monsters.
Mario will have grown a beard, married Peach, and have children named Toad, Toad, and Toad.
No one will ever be able to finish an F-Zero race seeing that the cars are too fast for any non-trained person to drive.
Final Fantasy will come out with it's last iteration: Final Final Fantasy: We Mean It This Time!

Still rockin' the GameBoy brick. Yes, I do believe it's portable. It fits in my satchel.

Chrono_Cross

Animal Crossing. Seeing as they're released once every console thesed ays and as the Wii U hasn't been release and the new Animal Crossing on the 3DS is brand new. So, in reality, the Animal Crossing team is either going to wait a little while for AC3DS to gain sales and whatnot (and their track record of releasing so far is 2002, 2005, and 2008. So three years each and now in 2012 the new one will be released. So it seems every 3 years or so a new one is released.)

So in 2015, 2016 the new Animal Crossing for Wii U will be released. Otherwise nothing really comes to mind.

Just for you.

25 years from now: Mario is now a past mascot relegated to the occasional remake and five-year title gap. New franchise titles have taken the Nintendo mascot crown. Nintendo no longer produces consoles, but instead - like everyone else - releases titles third-party on whatever comes after tablet computers in terms of power, portability and general use. Now-retro Wii U titles available to download from the Virtual Console service. Cave Story DSiWare released in Europe.
