Sorry for offending you guys by putting Portal on my list, I really am. I mean clearly you don't shoot anything in portal or The Unfinished Swan, it's not like you are shooting Portals (which can kill things), and paint (which can hurt things). I know that is no where NEAR your definition of a shooter, "you don't shoot things apparently...

Ooh. I used to despise FPS all the way up to getting a 360. That pad managed to change my opinion of them entirely. I didn't even like mouse and keyboard. Having said that, I have gone back through the history of the genre, and there's quite a few non current gen stuff in my top 10.

There's a lot of first person games that are amongst my favourite games of all time, but I don't class them as shooters. I'm not going to criticise anyone that does however, it's all personal preference. Those games are

Portal/Portal 2
Mirror's Edge
System Shock 2
Deus Ex

All three Bioshock games, Portal (you use a portal gun, that's enough for me), Golden Eye, Left 4 Dead, Halo (I think it was #2?), Counter Strike.... Metroid Prime Hunters?

Sorry, my eyes are not very good and I'm usually not good at playing FPS games so I haven't played many.

Wow I love the logic in this thread. Just because you use an item or a gun in a game doesn't make it a FPS.

I really dont like using wikipedia for references but this was quickest that I could find.

@Tasuki, Somethings just must be accepted on the Internet like everything in first person is a FPS and every platformer that has some sort of backtracking and/or exploration is a Metroidvania and the previous consoles are retro..

Umm I think Portal is an fps because you have a gun thats shoots portals and your in 1st person
