Classic Metal- AC/DC, Def Leppard, Kiss, etc. Arena Rock- Boston, Journey, Foreigner, etc. Singer-Songwriters- Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Bob Seger, etc. Power Pop- Cheap Trick, Eddie Money, Rick Springfield, etc. Acoustic Rock- James Taylor, Jim Croce, Cat Stevens, etc. Psychedelic Rock- Jefferson Airplane, The Doors, Cream, etc. Southern Rock- Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers Band, .38 Special, etc. Latin Rock- Santana, War, etc. Folk- Simon & Garfunkel, Donovan, Bob Dylan, etc. Soft Rock- Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers, Chicago, etc. Blues Rock- Stevie Ray Vaughan, ZZ Top, Eric Clapton, etc. Rockabilly Revival- The Stray Cats,The Blasters, etc. Progressive Rock- Yes, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, etc.

Yeah, I think people lump classic rock into one specific sound, but that's misleading. Classic rock should mean rock that had a profound influence on the world of rock in general--that includes bands like The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, U2. Interestingly, most "classic rock" radio stations don't play any of those bands. They stick to bands like ACDC and the like.
