@gcunit i think he means next gen, not mid gen upgrade.
no microsoft and sony will stick to "look at those super HD graphics". if one of them chooses to go handheld they will loose. handheld always means significantly less power.
No, they won't. Portable is more relevant to Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony are more interested in playing the super powerful, almost pc type consoles. Basically Nintendo is in their own league doing their own thing, while Microsoft, Sony, and PC and more in competition now.
In some respects I think it's kinda inevitable. We're getting increasingly diminishing returns for higher specs and at the same time components are getting rapidly more power efficient. We will get to a point where what you can do on a tablet style device is as impressive as what you can do on a box plugged into the wall. At least for the average end user and without the compromises we're used to for portables. Battery life and cost.
So yeah, when that day inevitably comes? I think a traditional console will be a hard sell. Whether or not they tackle that problem by fighting fire with fire and doing their own portables I'm not sure. Maybe by that point Apple comes to the table and has an iPad with a Switch style dock and controller. And I suspect that by the time that day comes XBox will be folded into Windows 10 anyways. What Sony does I'm not sure, maybe the 4th iteration of the PS4 is built into your Sony branded TV. Who knows.
But I do think the Switch is the first of a new kind of gaming device and that the PS4/XBOne will be the last of the old style. I think going forward home consoles won't be the same as they have been since the 80s. We're in the middle of a changing landscape.
