Alright...here's how we'll do this. Everybody who is interested, shoot me an email (chickenbrutus [at] yahoo [dot] com) and I'll get a mailing list or something together. I already set up a blog for this, I just need to rework it a bit for our purposes.

Since a few people have concerns about getting started and have requested examples, I think I'll start with some easy, fun exercises like we used to do in the college workshops. (An example wouldn't help anyway...if I showed you an example of a cowboy story, it'd mislead people into thinking that I wanted more cowboy stories!) The exercises tend to be very short and are mainly for fun while getting the creative juices flowing, and they'll ask you to write a story that satisfies a handful of specific conditions...for instance, including the following things in your story: the name of a Greek God, four different types of cheeses, and a talking gorilla. (Later on your stories will be expected to make more sense. )

But yes, please send me an email if you are interested. (Email addresses will remain confidential.) Maybe we can get this rolling within the next few weeks.

The only requirement is that you have internet access. Everything we do we SHOULD be able to do on the blog itself. Either way, it'll be fun!

What's wrong with cowboy stories?

Chicken, I cried a little inside at your email response. Don't tell my manly cowboy friends.

Nothing's wrong with cowboy stories...or ANY kind of story...but I wouldn't want anyone to see an example of one and then assume that that's what they're meant to be producing. I'd be much more interested in what comes from the writer himself/herself.

And don't forget to email me...posting here is nice, but it's not enough. I'll need your email address for the mailing list to keep everyone abreast of what's happening. Glad to see the interest, by the way.

I've gotten a few emails from folks, so thanks. Keep them coming. The blog is "up" but not quite ready. I'll send a link when it becomes workable.

I may just have everyone send their work to me rather than post it directly themselves, to keep things better organized. But we'll see how it goes. Discussions/comments will be informal and as unregulated as possible. Just be nice.

Bump.

Signed up a couple days ago, but now it's your turn! (assuming you haven't already)

Scared of the future, but bored with the past.

Philip_J_Reed

Yeah, I'm kind of disappointed that I only had a few official signups. There seemed to be more interest than that. We can probably do it with fewer people, but it won't be quite as fun, and I'll probably treat it much more informally.

Oh well. It's not too late.

@Chicken Brutus - Maybe people just don't want to put out their e-mail? Either that or they don't want to commit.

I can't decide myself. Sounds interesting. I've been interested in the idea of writting storys or mybe even a book someday. I don't really have much experience though. Do like to think that I have a decent imagination though. Would love to come up with a really cool story. I've tried to write down ideas (not too detailed though.) Why do we have to email it?

If you're interested in writing a book "some day," the time to start writing is now. It takes a lot of bad writing, followed by a lot of mediocre writing, before you're capable of producing good writing...let alone great writing. It's sort of like the piano. No matter how good your teacher is, you always start off making the darndest racket...

But that's okay. And that's what this is for. A place to make and receive friendly--but honest--critiques. If you have any interest in writing, or even just reading, it will be rewarding to get inside of somebody's story and find out what makes it work. (Or find what's preventing it from working.)

I won't be making anyone's email address public (set up a fake account, if you really are concerned about that)...I'm just going to use it to coordinate things with you guys. Sending out a single email to everyone on the mailing list is an easier way to make sure everyone got it than to post it on a forum and hope they find it before it gets buried.

Regarding emailing stories: I'll suggest that they're sent to me directly, and I'll post them to the blog. The reason for that is a) web formatting can be daunting and I don't want anyone to be turned off by that fact, and b) if everyone is posting stories willy-nilly we'll have chaos. We'll post up a story or two at a time so that everyone gets the chance to have their story read and discussed before the next one comes along.

I won't be posting the direct link to the blog here (another reason for the email), and if anybody wishes to write/submit under a pen-name for identity reasons, that's fine. Hopefully issues of this kind won't prevent people from signing up, but, if they are, by all means bring them up, and we'll discuss them.

I'm up for this too, by the way. Just been in a manic rush (finished my degree last week) and have not really had time to scour the forums. I'll drop you an email soon.

Really good idea, this. I'm always looking for ways to hone the writing skills, and have been considering doing an English degree of some sorts - this should give me a flavour for whether or not it is really my sort of thing.

@Chicken Brutus - I think I WILL give this a try. It'll be good for me and my creativity. Having something structured will help keep me focused and motivated.
You right about the emails. That does make sense.
By the way.. is this happening soon?

Regarding soon-ness:

If I get enough interest I'll fast-track it. Right now I'm working on finishing off a writing project of mine that's taken me five years to complete (crazy, I know...), but this will be a good diversion for me. (PS--sorry I didn't add you during the Mario Kart thing last weekend. I saw the name LTGamer and I KNEW I recognized it from the forum...but couldn't remember who you were specifically. If only you could upload your Ghostbusters icon... )

Haha, I'm not a fan of fan fiction, but if that interests you, can't be a bad way to start!
