I remember when I played Mario & Luigi for GBA just after release and I turned off the console while it was saving and it erased my save file. I had played through about 80 % of the game so I was quite sad, but I was determined to beat the game so I started all over again. Since then I'm always careful when shutting down my systems so I won't risk losing the save file.

Someone else here made that mistake as well?

I stupidly turned off the game when during saving when Mario and Luigi were in Joke's End... Which meant I lost a file which had three quarters of the game completed.

Pac-Man World 3 for the PC. I don't even know why my brother got me the PC version, when I had a perfectly fine PS2, but I digress. One day when I went to play it, the game wasn't there, it uninstalled itself. So when I went to reinstall it, the thing asked me to put in a code. I didn't have any code s, I was never able to play the game ever again. Why do I even need a code? Why can't I just install and play?

Back when Shadow the Hedgehog was released, I enjoyed the game and played through all of the stages. Don't know how but the save data corrupted. Thankfully, nothing else on the memory card was affected and I know that game's considered not very good but I had fun with it on the first playthrough so when it happened, I sold the game out of disappointment. Bought it again, a few years later due to nostalgia.

That's the only save data loss I've had (so far).

Corrupt PS3 hard drive, lost absolutely everything. Most annoyingly about 200 odd levels in Dragon's Dogma. Too traumatic to even bother starting again.

Rather recently, my PSP went nuts on me. I couldn't start it without it shutting down right away, and nothing wanted to work anymore. Turned out, something was wrong with the battery, so I replaced it. The result: a 4GB Memory Stick was corrupted (how that even works is just beyond me). The wiped data includes over 200 hours Busou Shinki, roughly 180 hours Phantasy Star Portable 2, and most importantly, over 800 hours of post-endgame progress on Disgaea 2! There were some other games alongside them, but those three saves really mattered. Since then, my PSP is doomed to be a portable music player.

Pokemon Gold and Sliver. Apparently everybody who has been playing their game since day one of the release like crazy will all experience the lost of data. That is like more then four years of my life doing nothing but playing Pokemon ( Omgsh how horrible I am to even think of my life, trapped inside of an small structure ( closet space ) and doing nothing but playing pokemon when I could be associating with girls I will probably never see again. As those shapes are lost to time and space.

That was my worst save lost ever.

The next save lost was when I had an home invasion and they took my Compact Discs, and Computers. I had moments including pictures, recordings, and writings that was precious to me. I had like a bunch of save files backed up.

When I first got a Gamecube (without a memory card mine you) I 100% Sonic Heroes. All A rank in hard mode, all emeralds, ect. I told my mom not to turn my Gamecube off till I get a memory card. The next day, my mom did the opposite and in turn erased all of the blood and sweat I putted into that game by turning it off. I didn't even get a memory card afterwards!

Star ocean for the ps2, I let my girlfriend at the time borrow the game along with my memory card. I had collected just about everything the game could offer and was pretty darn close to finishing the game. Then one day she calls me and says, "don't get mad." I figured that she had overwritten my game file. At that point all I could do is forget about that game all together lol.

I have accidentally overwritten a save file in Fire Emblem: Awakening. I had almost touched the 100 hours in that file!

Same story as Revolver. The official 1019 card + WiiConnect24-enabled Wii = bad times. I salvaged some data by copying it to another card and testing them individually, but I lost most data for games like Prime 2, Pokémon Colosseum (RIP to the forgotten Pokés), Mario Party 4 (and I previously lost that data when my nephew deleted it), the Pikmins... and although I lost Melee too, I was smart enough to have backed up a save for that. If I lost that one or my AC town... ugh. Don't wanna think about it.

I managed to rescue my Madden '07 data (most importantly, the 20 in-game years of franchise mode - yes, that's exactly as sad as that sounds), since it just happened to be the game that was running in the Wii when everything went wrong. Everything else was scorched from existence, the most bitter loss being my Melee save with every trophy unlocked.

It was such a bummer. The 1019 card issue is the sort of thing that you don't even realize is a problem until it happens to you and you try to look up what went wrong, though it seems to have happened to enough people that it's at least fairly well known now.

Virtue's Last Reward. My save data got corrupted with that. Since I was so engrossed in the story, I spent the next day rushing through the game while making the exact same story choices until I got to where I was.

I vaguely recall losing even more game hours when a game on the PS2 got corrupted, but I can't remember what game. It might have been Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness.

Oh yes, Pokemon. Forgot about those games and how easily they seemed to lose save data.

I mean, I swear my copy of Pokemon Red was jinxed; every time it could possibly ever lose the save file, it did. Messed around with some glitches including Missingno? Lost save file. Forgot to save after loading an existing file? Lost the save file. The power ran out at one time? Lost the save file. Lets just say it made me a bit paranoid about losing save files afterwards...

In college, I lost 21 years of Franchise Mode on one of the Madden's for my PS2. My roommate and I had played every single game for our respective franchises, and we'd done all the off-season draft and trading stuff every year as well. We spent hundreds of hours on it. Then one day we booted it up and it was gone. That sucked.

It was a first party data card, too. I remember we got about six seasons into the next franchise mode and it corrupted again. Different card. Stupid PS2.
