Miyamoto also opened his mouth several times about the next Pikmin during the Wii generation, and we all know what happened there. Other M is also strictly set between Super and Fusion as it is, it wouldn't work as a prequel unless it was entirely redone. I wouldn't mind a prequel that takes place before the original Metroid, and emphasizes events that have been kept in the manga...but like I said, that's not Other M.
Pikmin's not as big of a franchise as Metroid though, it just got its third game in about 8 years.
I know it can't be a prequel now; I'm just saying how most of the events that occured in Other M could've been tweaked to happen before the first Metroid. Stuff like the MB nonsense, Samus' flashbacks, etc. would be taken out.
Also, I'm sure you've seen and/or read "that" new article that went up today.
