Although I'm not really sure what thanksgiving is all about. Who are thankful to? God? Friends? Family? Is it a religious thing? I don't really get it.

It's a tradition that supposedly started when the pilgrims landed in a America. They threw a large feast to thank the Native Americans for helping them get settled.

Nowadays, it's not so much who you are thanking as much as it is celebrating everything that you are most thankful for in life. It's a great day with freinds and family eating great food. It's the best.

Actually, that is a myth produced and spread by the modern school system for reasons I don't understand. The original Thanksgiving was, in fact, a highly religious affair to give thanks to God, not the Indians, for surviving the harsh winter as many Pilgrims had died. The Indians joined in on the feasting (I suppose giving thanks to their god? Either that or just eating.). So it was a very open affair; but the directive was definitely to give thanks to God, not the Indians, as indicated in the writings of the Pilgrims.

Up until recently, Thanksgiving and designated "Days of Thanksgiving" before it was made an official yearly holiday were all very religious affairs. These days, however, great numbers of people just gather to eat and, hopefully, reflect on things to be thankful for. Not sure if this is a majority of people as I still hear about a lot of people celebrating this in a religious way, including myself. But it's definitely something new that has popped up and become very widespread.
