Hey folks. I just wanted to draw the attention of any interested parties to a youtube series I'm doing right now...a part-by-part video essay on Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. It's about halfway through, as far as uploading goes (I have all but the last chapter or two ready on my computer), and I thought I'd post it here for any fans of that truly excellent children's film.

It's a collection of personal recollections and insights...not very helpful as far as facts are concerned (admittedly), but I try to provide some jumping off points for interesting discussion. Doing this has also helped me to realize how much I absolutely adore the film. I can't think of many others I could do this for without losing interest or running out of things to talk about.

Anyway, you can click the above link, and navigate the chapters in the right-hand pane. I won't bump this each time I post a chapter, so subscribe if you'd like to follow it.

That is all.

That film had some bizarre changes of mood (YOU LOOSE), but that's why I love it so much.

Absolutely. I love how frequently (and quickly) it swings from unbounded joy to a child almost drowning, or being dropped into an incinerator. They just don't make children's films like that anymore.

Any kids movie that features a chicken being decapitated is full of win. (As I write this on Sunday, I think that's the segment you last uploaded)

Oh yeah...The RowdyRodimus Matrix of Leadership Tour '10 is over and I'm back. Be worried.

I am the one you despise. I am he who says what you really deep down know but are affraid to admit. I am the Anti-Fanboy, the crusader of truth in a world built on your lies.

Did he do a Willy Wonka thing as well, or is "that is all" just something he says? I don't think I've ever made it all the way through an Archfiend video to be honest. I end up seeing his comments on videos I enjoy, and on the channels of folks I'm friends with...but none of his output has really grabbed me.

Of course, the only person with a "talk-into-the-webcam-for-10-minutes" approach to vid making that I watch is Chris Chan...

The song "pure imagination" is actually what further inspired me to pursue a career in video game creation. edit Did you read the book (and the sequel) as well?

Although I appreciate Gene Wilder and some of the imaginative bits here and there, that film just depresses me. Not out of sympathy for the character(s) or anything like that, mind you, but due to something horrible in the overall aesthetic, starting with the short, orange-faced abominations and running through a number of more minor elements.

Also, the damn burping / floating thing made me angry even as a kid.

But do carry on. I'll go buy a few copies and burn them later to make amends to the universe for this thread.

I have read the book, but not its sequel. I'm making a point of judging the film on its own merits, however, as I don't think it's right to take the promises made by one medium and expect another to live up to them. I do have a mini-rant about fidelity, though, in one of the videos posted...but beyond that, I don't think I'll have much to say on the subject.

Also, Wario...boooo.

I just said that because of the "That is all." but I remember him talking about Willy Wonka being one of his all-time favorite movies.

I absolutely love this movie, though I agree with @warioswoods that the burping made me angry, lol.

the only reason it made me angry was not the burping or anything, but the fact that (keep in mind I read the book first) Charlie was not like the other wretched children. He was pure, and innocent, and good. The character was not prone to stealing anything. In the movie, he stole fizzy lifting drink. While I think CB is right in that we can not expect the same thing as the book, that was a major character flaw they gave charlie that he never originally had. It would be like making a movie on Charlie Brown, and making his life perfect.

Yeah, that segment will be uploaded in the next day or so...I just finished editing it. I do address this, though more for its resonance within the film than as compared to the original text. I'll be interested to read the comments on that one.

I may watch that clip of your commentary just to see if you react in a sufficiently disapproving manner to such a terrible scene, and then proceed to judge your worth as a person on that basis.
