Will we be able to transfer our purchased virtual console and wiiware games to the next gen nintendo console?

One would assume that Nintendo would have the sense to incorporate such a feature. You never know though; there have been many insensible moves in the video games era. I'd bank on Nintendo letting you move your Wii handle to the new machine when it eventually comes out.

I was actually thinking earlier today that this may be the only way to excuse part of the incredibly sparse release schedule for virtual console games. I have no idea how many are eligible for Virtual console (right sized, ease in emulation, licensing rights, any actual demand, etc), so let's just make a ridiculous guess and say over 1000 mire. if NOA moves up to 2 games a week (there is such a thing?) and adds no more consoles, this would last us for about 10 years. Assuming Nintendo does not plan one console for this long, that leaves either of the following options (or something I forgot):

1. Let down the consumer and make an incomplete virtual console
2. Increase the speed of virtual console releases
3. Continue this trend to the next console

I find option 3 to be the most likely, but probably only with some sort of confirmation that you are only transferring to the one console (considering how you may not be able to keep the games when you even get a replacement with them, this might require some new rulings on there side). If this happens, I could possibly see that they expand the service to higher end consoles if they haven't by then (Saturn, Dreamcast, Gamecube, losing the backwards compatibility).

A man can dream, I guess...

I'd bank Nintendo wouldn't allow you to transfer games, since they've probably realized that there are enough people that would rebuy the games, or not care enough, for them to make enough profit to balance the discontent it would inflict against them.

Wanderlust, that's what I've always thought. They are saving N64 games for the next console, which may also be able to emulate games such as Dreamcast / Saturn, allowing the VC tradition to continue without rereleasing the same games, which almost no one would approve of. I wouldn't buy the next system if it doesn't have such a feature.

I do hope that someday some of the older consoles will be "closed," rather than milking them slowly for years and years, getting fans' hopes up for a game that may well never come up. It would be nice if one day Nintendo says, Well, that about covers it for the NES. All the good games (barring licensing issues) are available, and a bunch of crappy ones, too, for good measure. Now let's started releasing from another console more heavily. No telling if Nintendo's current release schedule will ever allow for this, though. I think NES, SNES, and their colleagues need to be at least nearly done before the next console, and then just push N64, Neo Geo, some new consoles, and WiiWare (or whatever the next iteration of WiiWare is).

Of course, I don't work at Nintendo...

what we could do is make a list of the current consoles available, the number of games for them (barring licensing issues, developer existence failure, or so low a rating that the game would not be resold), get an arbitrary number of releases per week that nintendo may do (near 1, unfortunately), and figure out the number of weeks this scheme would last for.

Of course, depending on how Nintendo defines "arcade" there could be a few problems in this plan.

with the way things have been going lately... and with the world economy the way it is. I wouldn't expect a next gen console to come any time soon.

I expect the next console to come in november 2011.

Really jpfan1989? I'm expecting a Wii update, in the same vein as DSi, with the main features being expanded harddrive and online functionality.

Not to mention an expansion from 480p to 1080p.

With Nintendo? I don't think so. Try from 480p to 720p. Which would be fine for me, since I only have a 720p TV anyway.

As for the main topic, I figure the best way Nintendo could do it would be to let you connect your existing Club Nintendo account to the new system, with the full understanding that by doing so, your account is no longer connected to your Wii and your games will now only work on the new system. Then you can just continue from there.

I refuse to believe they'd just screw it and leave us to re-buy things because that would cause a MASSIVE wave of negative PR that would pretty much destroy the company. Maybe I exaggerate a little, but I'm sure there would be a lawsuit or three over the matter, especially from people who've spent an especially large amount of money on downloaded games. I'm just over $300 now, and having officially spent more on downloads than for the hardware they run on, there's no WAY I'll accept not being able to move those downloads to the Wii's successor!

While this would be pretty lame to me, as I am really spoiled having all my Nintendo games minus Earthbound on one console right now, I don't think it would cause that huge of an uproar since you could always -- you know -- keep your Wii. I very much hope they allow some way to transfer, but if they don't, well, they could do much worse.

Nintendo has previously said that their next system will be competitive hardware-wise, so I would think 1080p to be a realistic guess. For one thing, you know every console is going to have motion and IR controls next generation. The competition would be stupid not to come prepared this time. So Nintendo can't rely just on that. They'll need fancy graphics again, and hopefully something else up their sleeves.

Of course, with the Motion+ still not released, the current console still hasn't reached its full potential, so we probably have a couple more years at the very least before a new one. And an update ala DSi seems unlikely. Nintendo has always updated handhelds this way, but never consoles. GB - GB Pocket - GBC - GBA - GBA SP - GBA Micro. Aside from GBC to GBA, most of these changes were small, and spanned out over quite a few years. Nintendo hasn't done an updated console since the SNES, and that was a very minor update that no one cared about.

What update was that? I missed it. I do care though...pray tell

You probably won't. It was just a thinner model. Didn't even have a new name. Hardware was the same.
They did the same for the NES, though that had a slightly more significant change in that it was made to top-loading.

I think Nintendo would have the common sense to allow you to transfer the games you bought on the Wii's VC to the next version of the Wii. The VC shop would just keep growing and growing. If they don't allow this, I probably wouldn't buy the Wiis successor.

If they didn't, the backlash would be immense. Petitions, boycotts, zomg!

Not least from me. I have around $600 worth or WiiWare and DSiWare and VC. While I don't care if I lose the Gameloft stuff, there's games on there that I want to have more access to than one console generation - like Art STyle.

Machu

You won't lose them, you'll just have to have your Wii sat next to your Wii2, and have them both plugged into the telly. :/

Trust me, I'd much rather they give us the option to transfer our old VC into our new VC, but...

?

If they do do this, it will be the last time I buy a Nintendo product.

Honestly, I expect the next generation of PS360 and Wii consoles to be backward compatible with the software on their online stores. I imagine we'll see this in their future generations as well. What will happen is that the tech inside the boxes will become better, but the system will remain the same and they'll supplement the stores with prior console releases (e.g., the Wii3 will have downloadable GC and Wii games which can be stored on the multiple terrabyte harddrives).
