the princess we know now as 'Peach' is actually 'Princess Toadstool' from the days of SMB. they apparently gave her 'Peach' as a given name when SM64 hit.

Yeah I know that lol. But it seems Pauline/Daisy started it all, yet we have a princess that is relatively new... Peach/Toadstool is the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, yet we also have Princess Daisy and Pauline. What is the point in having three princesses? 0_o
All we see is Peach, yet it seems to of all started with Pauline and/or Daisy. Where does Peach fit in? 0_o
I know that Miyamoto has said that "the Mario series is timeless" with no timeline etc. but don't explain where Peach came from.
And also, Daisy? I've never seen her in any Mario Game, besides the sports series and Kart. :/

That don't count! For one, it's not a game and secondly that movie was god awful... and she wasn't even a princess, she was just some random woman until they went to the Mushroom Kingdom.

Nope, she was a princess. And the love interest of Luigi, so at least that (despite the rest of the movie) was canon.
@Demon: Why do you keep referring to 'Pauline/Daisy' coming before Toadstool? Daisy came after Pauline and Princess Toadstool both; she was the princess from Super Mario Land (whereas Toadstool was straight outta Super Mario Bros., lol).

Peach was her given name in Japan since SMB, why they changed it too Toadstool for the NA release that I cant tell you. With the release of SM64 they just decided to keep the name Peach from them on to make it simpler. Kinda like what they did with Final Fantasy 7 when that came out on PS.
@Demon: Yes she was a Princess she was sent to New York by her parents to keep here away from King Koopa. They wanted to give Luigi a love interest for this movie and where planning to introduce Peach in the sequel which because of how bad SMB was they never made.

Actually Peach was originally called by her Japanese name outside of Japan in Yoshi's Safari, which came out 3 years before SM64 did in the US. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Wow, you are bashing a character that hasn't even had the oportunity to defend herself! The poor girl is always getting kidnapped by DK whenever he feels disgruntled. Yeah I know that, I could only watch a little bit of it before it started bypassing my ears and went straight over my head. I'm gonna give up on this, this "Mario Timeline" is insane and more confusing than the Zelda Timeline.

Peach's father is King Mushroom (or something along those lines anyways)... her mother is a mystery, and yet Peach rules over the Mushroom Kingdom, yet she's not the queen? Weird... Daisy is supposedly Peach's sister and Pauline is just some person... o_0
The whole Mario series seems to be skrewed. You have 3 damsels in distress, but they all seem to have come out of nowhere. I'm not trying to make sense out of a video game, but in all of Nintendo's other series they've all had a timeline, but the Mario timeline is a jumble of wtf?
@Demon: does it really matter? this is what happens when you overthink things. the entire point of the Mario games has been 'defeat the bad guy(s) and save the princess/good guy(s)/kingdom'... that much has done pretty well so far in terms of entertainment value, and so long as i'm having fun, that's all i need lol :3
