Topic: Will nintendo shut down the wifi servers for this gen's consoles soon?

All these "Nintendo's wii u is doooomeeedd!!" conversations really are making us over think a lot of things.. such as the end of nintendo, the lack of games, the future of the home console, etc but more specifically.. the NX on the horizon. Personally, I'd be excited to see nintendo make the jump from the wii u, and make a second atempt to recover their damage with the NX, however I nearly depressed myself thinking of what happened during the next gen console shift from the DS/wii to the 3DS/wiiu eras.. the shutting down of wi-fi servers, which would be more castostrophic now with all the multiplayer heavy titles. (Splatoon, smash, mario kart 8, Federation Force, Pokemon, Pokebank data, some other things coming and already released.)

If the NX is truely on the horizon, is a server shutdown also on the horizon? Will these games soon be unplayable? I mean, the wii only had a couple.. Battle revolution, smash, and mario kart, while the DS had mostly just pokemon and to a lesser extent mario kart, and Metroid prime Hunters, however we're talking about many many more titles and several internet reliant, "Apps" I'll call them, that can cause some pretty severe damage. I suspose current DLC will be unaffected, however online DLC would be missed.

Granted, I hope the NX fixes everything the wii u failed at, and was already discussed in previous threads, but what I wanted to aim discussion at is the servers themselves, if we really want those servers gone so soon on a 3 year console, and probably the 3ds as well, which doesn't have a new gen system itself to move to like we had the 3ds around the time for the ds lite. (Perhap we won't get the shutdown until then?)

Will they keep the servers running? Will they shut them down?

Personally, I was hoping instead of shutting the servers down.. they could either:

  • Pull a microsoft and charge to keep old servers running, Having the option to pay is better than no option at all.
  • Don't shut them down, (durr, we all want this, but highly unlikely for nintendo to spend money to keep a failure console's wifi alive.)
  • Create new servers to run the this gen's games on, for the next gen consoles.. but remove compatability for the old gen servers. (Ex. Splatoon still playable online if you play it from an NX)

Your thoughts?

{Disclaimer: I'm not that familiar with the whole "business" reasoning of the server shutdown.. I read mixed things from "nintendo didn't want to pay" to "the original server holders forced them to shutdown" etc..

The will probably continue to use and just evolve their current online structure, which I would imagine means these games will continue to work. Also how "soon" are you expecting this to happen? This didn't happen for Wii/DS games for a few years after the next generation started, so I wouldn't expect this to happen until a few years after the next systems come. If the next systems release in 2017 (most likely when they will) then the Wii U games Online services would probably stop in 2019. So I wouldn't worry to much about it.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

I don't know how soon something like this would happen, I know the wii u has only been around for close to 3 years, and the NX has been discussed to be on the horizon very soon, even expecting reveal next year. Then of course, we don't necessarly have a formula or miyan calender were we can date everything's plan and easily predict the next move. The wii had 7 years of wifi, while currently, the wii u only had 3. I suspose it wouldn't be, THAT much sooner from the wii since the NX wouldn't even be out the year it's revealed, and the wifi would probably still be on a year after that minimal, however it's something to think about since players really are wanting to push this move to the next gen.

Same reason for the original wii/ds, the servers were wasting money, and probably in nintendo's marketing minds.. it helped push players to upgrade to a wii u/3ds.

Why does every one think the Wii U's time is over? Honestly I have not seen this much doom and gloom for the Wii U since launch are people that ready for something new?

From what I heard, they shutted down the DS and Wii server mostly because they were beyond their control and stuff happened with the company that provided them.

It was useless to try and provide an alternate service because the consoles were already old gen by the time and it would've costed them a lot of money.

It would make no sense for them to kill their current consoles' online right now for no good reason.

Yeah, @Morpheel beat me to it but to my remembrance, that's not the reason (at least, not the main one) why Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection was shut down. Wasn't it because the company providing the servers was shutting down?

I never said right now, this is just something regarding what may come up several years FROM now.

Specifically, topics like a recent NL article mentioning the NX reveal soon really made me want to make every minute of gameplay worthwhile since it's something that may turn up sooner than expected.

But I guess that reasoning does clear up a bit more about why the servers were shut down. Not really in nintendo's control.

Oh well then, it would be naive to think the servers will be up forever and ever. Not even Nintendo will last forever.

It's just not something we should worry about right now, I think.

Keep in mind that the Wii/DS servers shutting down was do to Gamespy being shut down. It wasn't Nintendos choice.

Why would they do that? So far Nintendo is great. It is the puppets right? What is on the X-bone and PS4 that is so great?
