And think about this: shooter games will slowly fade out just like fighting games that were more popular in the 90s than shooter games are now, and Sony and Microsoft heavily rely on shooters to keep them alive, just as the NeoGeo relied on a lot of fighting games. And graphics will only go so far. Once again Sony and Microsoft rely on graphics more than gameplay. So what will happen then? Most likely Sony, Microsoft, or both, drop out of the Video Game race. Mario will never go away, Zelda will never go away, and Nintendo will never go away from consoles or handhelds.

The entire "Sony and Microsoft rely on graphics more than gameplay" and the "reliance on shooters" arguments are practically mute by this point. You are making it sound like great graphics and gameplay are mutually exclusive. Ever think that maybe technology is now at a point where developers can actually not sacrifice gameplay in favor of graphics? There are plenty of examples of games with great graphics AND great gameplay (see Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank series, Assassin's Creed 2, Street Fighter IV, Ninja Gaiden... I could list plenty more). Nintendo chose to go in a different direction and it worked for them. The HD direction worked well for Sony and Microsoft. There are a lot of shooters on the 360/PS3 but saying that's the only genre keeping them alive is ridiculous. Many of those shooters have great gameplay. FPS isn't the only genre on the 360/PS3. Many gamers even prefer the PC for the shooter genre (I know I do). It's not like the Wii has a wealth of shooters with great gameplay, because it really doesn't. Mario and Zelda will indeed never go away, but they aren't even the best games in their respective genres anymore either. They are still great game series but other series have since taken their formulas/genres and improved upon them. I'm a Nintendo fan but I'm not blind.

As for the Neo-Geo argument and fighting games. Bad analogy. No one in the 90s (actually, no one in any decade unless they pooped out cash, but kudos to anyone who could drop that much dough for a Neo-Geo back in the day) was going to spend $650 for a console for which each game for it cost close to $200. That's insane. You could build a high-end, awesome gaming PC for the price of that console and two games alone. That's why Neo-Geo failed, not because of fighting game reliance. Fighting games have always had a fanbase since Street Fighter II, people didn't just stop playing them all of a sudden, resulting in Neo-Geo dying out. All genres need to change or tweak themselves to survive over time. Fighting games did it. Now shooters are getting better and more varied (Borderlands, MAG, etc.), not falling out of popularity.

Nintendo has to live. They seem to be the only maker of games who brings in absolutely amazing games without the need of gruesome gore and hot porn.

Nintendo could go bankrupt and it wouldn't affect me too strongly. I have the consoles and the games, they aren't going away. I like to play games, but I also don't feel the need to have the latest and greatest as long as there's something fun to play.

I'm actually feeling like putting in some time playing 2600 games on my StellaOSX emulator using a Playstation Dual Analogue pad after playing a lot of Intellivision games on Intellivision Lives! Atari's been out of the hardware game for over a decade now.

I do agree that seeing a Nintendo title on a Microsoft or Sony console doesn't make a lot of sense. Nintendo's been around for well over a century; unless the guys at the top have completely lost their minds I don't think they're likely to piss it all away again after the N64/GCN experience.

Handheld is fine, but given the explosion of the iPhone and smartphone gaming, I wouldn't rest on my laurels there. I've thought about DSi, but the fact is that I don't do a lot of portable gaming; an iPhone is much more likely in my future than a DS. Even if the next Nintendo home console is a big hit there's no guarantee I'll be along for the ride; I've never gone with a successor console in my life and have always skipped a generation or two. Now that I have three Wiis and games coming out of my ears, barring a trade-in program that lets me keep my downloads, I think this could be where my console gaming experience stops -- at least until I get a Mac Mini hooked up to the TV

Now, where to begin? I have been playing my Wii and Nintendo DS less and less, and my PS3 and PSP more and more. The ironic thing is that there is more shovelware on the Wii than the PS3, it really is sad. I personally wouldn't betoo upset if Nintendo left the console and handheld market. Now, don't get me wrong, I love my Wii and Nintendo DS. But, there appears to better and better games coming out on the PS3 and PSP than the Wii or DS. I'm still keeping and playing games on my Wii and DSi. I play more VC games on my Wii than retail games.

However, I read somewhere that Nintendo said that if they leave the console market, they will quit making software altogether. Why would Nintendo say that? I guess the idea of developing games on non-Nintendo consoles sickens them. If Nintendo decided to develop and release a new console and/or handheld, I might buy it depending on what they do with the next console or handheld. If Nintendo quit making software altogether, now THAT would upset me. I can also tell you this, if Nintendo does not find a way to have the option to transfer all my VC and Wiiware games to their next console, I will be very reluncant to buy it.

Nintendo going handheld only would be fine, but they need to find the option to hook up their handheld to a TV if Nintendo goes down that road. What baffles me the most is the lack of online play in Nintendo's recent games. Wii Sports Resort, NSMBW, and Spirit Tracks could've had online play, but Nintendo chose not to for some reason. Also, why is Nintendo intrested in making games like Wii Fit and Wii Relax but where are F-Zero, Kirby, Star Fox, and many other Nintendo IPs that have not yet made a debut on the Wii? I mean SMG2 and Metroid:Other M are going to be awesome games, but there needs to be something different besides Mario, Zelda, and Metroid on the Wii.
