Why is it that Film Makers can get Comic Book adaptions such as Iron Man, Captain America, or Hellboy right, but they completely trip over themselves when it comes to video games with the possibly exception to the first Mortal Kombat and maybe argueably Tomb Raider and Prince of Persia.

I've yet to see any Hollywood adaption of anything that I felt was worthwhile in comparison to the original. This is not to say they are always bad movies, but the format change is never beneficial - important details are always lost or changed, and the effect isn't always the same. The best you can hope for out of an adaption is that it's good enough to stand on its own. The real question is why do so many video game IP owners give their IPs to people who have no idea how to make a decent standalone movie?

Its because the comic industry works with the production company so they don't mess their ip up or in Ironman's case they make it themselves with their own studios.

Because one medium relies on being interactive and the other relies on not being.

That was fun!

Well... I wouldn't say comic book adaptations work well either... non of the Bat man movies from any period EVER made a Joker that was absolutely true to the original character. He's always conveyed as a homicidal criminal, whether it's Burton or Nolan. What the Joker REALLY is, is a sociopathic maniac who kills for fun, but also has a goal. That goal is to show the world that anyone can become just as insane as he is after one bad day. Here's another thing about him: he's just as smart as Bats, and looks down on anyone who isn't him, as Batman is his only equal.

Now about Batman... none of the movies truly keep his sneaky combat style. After the first movie in most cases Batman doesn't rely on stealth for whatever reason and charges in on things. The movies never give him much detective work and don't portray him as the smartest human being on Earth, while in the comics he's known as the World's Greatest Detective. Give him a key and he'd be able to tell you that it goes to some warehouse in the boat docs without looking anything up. We also miss out on a lot of the psychological issues Batman has when it comes to movie interpretations, not to mention the signature cape that's supposed to envelop his body when standing, adding to the intimidating atmosphere his presence is SUPPOSED to create.

The most notable issue is that they're taking interactive narratives that are waaaay over two hours long, and condensing them into two hour passive narratives.

Unlike with comics where there is a really well established source material, the games typically chosen for movies don't have the thick story comics do. That leaves movie makers to fill in the blanks.

On the other side of the spectrum, when you are trying to drive a 50-60 hour game with a long story, there is going to be a LOT of content that would need to be cut, and a lot of content built around the interactivity of the medium. For example a major core aesthetics of RPGs is player growth, and the story incorporates that, but how is a movie supposed to include that.

Because they simply won't do anything unless they can change the source material enough to call it their own.

After all, you can't say you directed a movie if you're just passively following someone else's template (and if you're a movie director your ego is 70% of your personality).

Even comic movies tend to be their own universe loosely based on that of the comics.

I still say because most videogames have insane plot mechanics. And up until recently most either didnt have enough story to string together to make the crazy make sense or too much story so it would be really hard to condense it into a format that a person that never played the game could watch. I thought the first mortal kombat movie did pretty well. Likely because it didn't really try to explain too much. Mario is pretty much a drug induced fever dream if you think about it too much.

I don't consider Michael Bay's Transformers movies to be accurate to the original source material.

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

It is very simple, they want to make their own movie. Even though it would have much less drama and less hassle in general, they just simply refuse to make a movie without some notable name for the quick cheap hype.

Many games (and comics) can be (and have been) accurately adapted to film without major changes, but that would be too much effort for most major filmmakers today.
