None of those games use the same characters with the expection of Halo. I wouldn't say people hate Mario but they may feel were seeing an over reliance on the propery. I can see why but people need to understand that Mario is such a malleable character that it needs that.

People are much more forgiving for the other series because they have an actual Narrative flow as well that all they have an emphasis on multiplayer.

No they're much of the same tired old thing over and over

The Same could honestly be said for most of Nintendo franchises on the surface as well. I mean my three of my favorite Zelda games are arguably the same game (TP, OOT, ALTTP).

But I guess the argument is that Nintendo doesn't dip into older franchises or make New ones as much as Sony or Microsoft does. The other two have struck a balance where they can release legacy franchises (Halo, Forza, GT, Infamous, Fable) etc but has grown their studios are partners to also work on new IP or reveiving old IP as well. (Quantum Break, The Order, Shadows of the beast, Killer instinct.)

Only big difference is Nintendo has this old world view of developing software through western studios hence why Retro is the only noteworthy studio they have.

How is it the same thing?

Super Mario Bros 2(USA) was different. Super Mario Bros 3 was different. Super Mario Land was different and so on. There are always new things that each mario game gives. Granted some mario games may feel same but then again, its not too bad either.

Everyone that I've talked to loves Mario, including me. Heck even my friends who are Sony and Xbox fan-boys/girls love Mario.
When it comes to hate I think Sonic is the front runner of being criticized by gamers.

They're not the same games over and over again. With very few exceptions, no series really is. It's just that only fans of any series are actually willing to observe the changes that every single sequel has. No matter how big or small the changes are, a person who doesn't already care about a series is unlikely to observe the changes unless they're so radical that it's arguably no longer the same series, since they usually don't play enough of or pay attention to a series that doesn't immediately interest them.

People tend to forget that a series is supposed to have common elements to them, hence why they can be called a series, and thus make logical fallacies like, "every game in series X is the same", when they're really not. People don't want a series to change, they want a different series entirely.

In short, people who don't like Call of Duty will say that it's always the same because it's still Call of Duty.
People who say Mario is always the same will continue to do so until it stops being Mario.

And even then Mario has like several genres that are nothing alike (Kart, Party, Platforming, RPG, etc.)

Mario games are fun. I just wish Nintendo would give him a new look. Take a look at the images below I found from google.

All 3D Mario games have essentially looked the same since Mario 64. (Now, I'm not counting M&L games or Paper Mario here). This is one thing I admire about The Legend of Zelda series. Nintendo changes up the art style in almost every game and keeps Link and Co. fresh while Mario just sits around and looks like same old Mario from 1996.

I realize each of these games has different powerups and such for Mario, but the art style has been pretty much this since Mario 64. Again, I'm not saying Mario games are boring - they are just games that Nintendo doesn't really change up much nor take many risks with.

When Nintendo made the Wind Waker back in 2002, that art style and direction was a risk by Nintendo that showed guts. I don't see Nintendo ever taking risks like that with it's beloved 3D Mario games.

Why hate him? Are you serious!?!?!?
My parents hired that coin-grabbing barsteward as a carpenter in 1981 and guess who was always missing. At first his "It's-a go time" sounded very enthusiastic but soon after you only got a "mamma mia" and "bye bye" when you called him.
Little did they expect that soon after he'd use a fake name, pretend he's a plumber and do such dubious things as poaching, bomb deliveries, property sharking and working in a cement factory which is always suspicious for people with an Italian-American background.
I mean no one's saying he shouldn't do his sports, skirt chasing and self-fulfillment stuff. But that guy's got a freaking time machine so why not use it to get your actual job done for christ's sake! >=o[

Dear kiddies on Nintendo Life:

Just because some of the kids in your school don't like something does not mean that "everyone hates" it, and therefore there needs to be a thread made in defense.

Love,

For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday.

Everyone doesn't "hate" Mario, it's more-so that people are on a Mario burnout. There's only a certain amount of the fat plumber we can take without getting sick of his face.

Define: Everyone

Regardless, there are three types of people in this world. The people who love Mario to death, the people who wish Nintendo woupd stop releasing them annually and actually try to make something more original, and the people who are die-hard PS360 fans. I'm part of the second group. I don't hate Mario, it's just seeming bland lately. Maybe 3D World will change that, but who knows.

"Nintendo DOES want to use Metroid, Starfox and F-Zero, but games DO take time and Nintendo uses time to create and playtest and quality sound thier games"

I know that good games take time, but I have a feeling we won't see those franchises for very long! Simply because Nintendo goes for the quick money, wich is Mario games! Besides, The last Metroid, Starfox and F-zero have all in common that they didn't sell as much as Nintendo wanted! Wich is for a big part Nintendo's own fault, because they didn't market them properly! Nintendo is even drifting away from proper free-roaming 3D titles! Sidescrollers are easier (and cheaper) to make, I guess! And they are easier to make fun!

To put it short: The new Smash brothers will be another parade of characters we'll never see in their own games again!! I think it's a shame!!

Mario is a freaking icon for Nintendo. Nintendo fell in love with Mario when Super Mario 64 released. I don't hate Mario at all. Most of the games that invovle him are really good, in my opinon.

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

Counting spin-offs, and remakes, in the most recent 5 year span, GTA has had 2 games, Halo has had 5, CoD has had 10, and Mario has had 24. That being said, the Mario games play differently, but still.

Every Gaming console has had their mascot. Nintendo: Mario, Sega: Sonic, PStation: Crash and XB: Halo. That being said, Crash isnt PS's mascot anymore. Its good for a console to have a character that can be a "living" trademark for its system. Since Sega is now software and Sonic is still their mascot, they can "rent" out their mascot to other consoles. Its looking more and more like Nintendo and Sega (once huge competitors) are going to join forces soon. So we might start seeing more Sonic and less Mario maybe but Mario will always be the Nintendo staple. Mario has always driven sales for Nintendo. When you see Mario, you automatically know its Nintendo and there for know what system you need to play it on. Same with Halo. I don't know what game would be considered PStation's mascot, Sony pretty much just kinda uses anything it can get its hands into. Maybe Final Fantasy would be PStation's mascot now? But anyways, My point being, is that the reason Nintendo uses Mario soo much is because its an iconic character and when you think Nintendo, you think Mario. Sure, Mario does need a vacation, and sure, we could ALL use something new and fresh from Nintendo. IMO, Nintendo has a great category, full of choices for children and young teens. What they need now is something fresh for the generation that has grown up with the console, the older crowd that loves Nintendo but wants something more along the line of mature. Thats why you might see hate towards Mario, because people may think he is over used.
