Is society really so insecure that it can't enjoy something not explicitly made for adults?

You never heard of the brony fandom have you? That's a prime example of what you asked friendo.

I second this. Reminds me how people used to hate LOZ: Wind Waker because of the "cartoony" graphics. I guess the society doesn't really want "cartoony" innovation or any innovation at all. Just because it's "cartoony", that doesn't it's worse than anything else.

@midnafanboy Welp, that explains a lot.

I don't get that TV part at all.

Also, other than Wind Waker mentioned here, I can't remember any game crapped on or even called out for it.

In TV, while all animation tends to be unfairly overlooked, shows like Teen Titans were originally criticized for being "too cartoony", and "made for kids". Spectacular Spider-Man garnered the same complaint. Ironically, while both were for broad audiences, both were followed by shows legitimately created for small children.

Happens all the time. Mario is considered "for kids". People criticize the N64'a library for being "too cartoony". My dad literally asked me why Tales of Vesperia had worse graphics than the Wii (because it was cartoony).

Anyone who complains about things being too cartoony just screams of someone being horribly insecure about themselves.

Oh, ok, now I get it.

You see, the main complain about TT was animation (which, in first season, wasn't stuff of legends) and the jokes, which again, in first season were either done to death and also chibies, which back then anything Japan was popular and copypasted. I guess "cartoony" argument is more about the content (until they fleshed it out and made it one of the best shows evah later), rather than it being drawn. Although I'll hand them this - even the worst episode of TT wasn't even half as painful as Teen Titans GO!. Now that's "cartoony" and unfunny piece of crap.

Mario is considered for kids, because that's what it is. But considered for kids doesn't mean that adults can't enjoy it.

Sometimes games being cartoony can be painful to look at actually. Best example of modern game would be Diablo 3 Whimsyshire.

Yes, because it affects what is available. Shows like Young Justice are a rarity because of this.

It also affects who I can talk to about things.

Kid friendly =/= for kids

Generally, things created for kids are "so bad only a child could enjoy it", while something kid friendly has general entertainment value that happens to be appropriate and accessible to kids.

People often forget that "E for everyone" means for everyone. But hey, it's fun to hate things you don't understand.

Heck a lot of people think, "T for Teens" means for little kids. When it was revealed that Destiny was rated T, a lot of people complained, because they thought it was going to be a baby game.

What I end up finding is that these "cartoony" comments in negative light don't often come from adults themselves. I'm not generalising, but in most instances when I see the "cartoony" "kiddy" label being thrown around, it's usually by adolescents >14 years old, as they're in an insecurity that if they like something that's "cartoony", they'll think it means that they're being "kiddy" and thus they take solace in seemingly "mature" things. As a result, we come to a place where ironically, taking comfort in something that's mature and dissing "cartoony" "kiddy" things is actually immature. Although I do want to once again stress that not all adolescents are like this, I've just seen many who are like this, so I mean no offence to generalise anyone because of their age.

It does affect what is made.

A good example is stuff like V for Vendetta or Watchmen. WB have stopped doing it due to it not being able to be shown to 14yr olds.

Or because they bombed as movies (if I remember correctly, one of them was considered a bomb?)... and there is no sequel of V to adapt. And they just recently started making other Watchmen comics, after 25 years of silence.

But speaking of cartoony, that reminded me 300 the second - it was so laughably bad, cartoony and shows how demented and what an shadow of a man Frank is.

V for vendetta didn't bomb it made 70 million in the US and in other places it made 62 million add them both it made 132 million in the box office now that's a hit.Now Watch men that was a miss not a bomb, but it didn't make the money people wanted though.
