I don't understand this so I thought maybe someone can enlighten me. People still call PS4, Wii U and Xbox One as next gen when in actuality they are the current gen. Yeah I understand its because the PS3 and Xbox 360 are still in production and its to avoid confusion with those systems but the PS2 was in production for most of the last gen and no one called the PS3 a next gen console while the PS2 was in production last gen.
What are we going to call the PS5, Xbox Two?? and next Nintendo console if people still call these current gen systems next gen?
I mean I kinda like the referring to this current gen as the New Gen to avoid confusion with the PS3 and Xbox 360. Next gen just sounds dumb now that they are here and are current.
Most people have stopped doing this but I believe it has to do with the fact that a lot of gamers have yet to make the transition to any of the three 8th gen systems and so still feel that 7th gen is relevant/current.
to keep making bad jokes about the WiiU being current gen

I'm sure the fact that the vast majority of gamers don't have a single "next" generation console yet means that they're still referring to something that's going to happen, as opposed to currently happening. Plus, if you refer to "next gen", people know what you're talking about. When you're talking about "current gen", you could be talking about 2 different things.
People kinda refer to new consoles as a 'level up'.
The consoles people have commonly now, are the PS3 and 360. The next level up would be the PS4 and One.
I call them current gen because Wikipedia calls the WiiU/PS4/XB1/3DS/Vita all in the same eight generation of consoles. They're all out now, so I call them all current gen. Pretty simple, dunno why some people don't get it.
Yeah it is just a title but it just doesn't make sense to me that's all. And so far everyone has brought up good points but again I dont see anything else doing that. It's just really odd.

People did this with the PS3 and 360 as well for many years after they'd been released. It irks me too. It doesn't matter if you don't own the systems. They've already been released so the PS4/XBone/WiiU are current gen and the PS3/360/Wii are last gen
