@Ryu_Niiyama: You are way more dedicated to language learning than I am, though it's easy to understand why as your interest goes way beyond the hobby level. I'm mostly interested in learning Japanese since it relates with my hobbies, and because I like Japanese culture in general. As for German, that was the only language my high school offered at the time, and I loved learning it from a heritage standpoint as well; as far as I've been able to tell, most of my ancestry is German.

Most of my language learning currently is related to my chosen field (programming) and trying to improve myself in those areas by brushing up on/learning different programming languages. Lately that's included a language that's way different syntax-wise from what I'm used to, as well as some Linux command line stuff. There's usually not much room left in my head at the end of the day for actual language learning, though I do manage to polish up on my German a bit on rare occasion.

@Tyranexx I do understand that perspective as well. Teaching myself Python and PHP right now and prepping for the SQL Server certs. German huh? Good on you, I know there are some dialect differences but after a home stay in Austria I realized I have no aptitude for that one. Good luck!

Edit: Did a great deal of Red Hat and Unix in college but I haven't been able to use it much now. What language with the odd syntax are you are working on?

how about a thread where any language is allowed? just so people can try out languages with the community?

@Ryu_Niiyama: I've touched Python and had a class on PHP back in college, though I've never used it. I interact with SQL Server almost daily at my job, so I'm used to going around in SQL quite a bit as well. The language I commonly deal with at my current job is called PowerScript (the language for the PowerBuilder environment, it's quite archaic and hasn't been developed well for the past few years. I'll save you the long explanation lol).

I'm also trying to transition into Ruby on Rails at my job to help out in that area as well, which is what's throwing me a bit of a curveball since I'm more familiar with .NET languages and their behaviors. Since my C# skills have gotten rusty, I'm also trying to improve on that again in my spare time. Plus, I do plan to delve back into either Visual Basic or Dark Basic at some point. ...I'm starting to think I need to clone myself in order to have time to do everything.

As for the command line stuff, I've been familiar with the simpler commands in Windows for awhile. Ubuntu is a different beast, but it wouldn't be bad if only my Virtual Machine would work correctly. grumble

Good luck to your endeavors as well! ^_^

@Luna_110 English isn't the only native language of the UK.

@The_Pocket_Gamer you say you aren't asking the forum to change yet in the same breath you say it is absurd, ignoring why the rule is in place here and common on forums that don't have a language focus. This is a privately run location that allows the public to have some access. It must be moderated and its content has a target demographic. UK gamers. Again you agreed to this when you signed up. The whole "I want to make an irrational complaint but when it is refuted I'll play the opinion card" is what I mean by chanting free internet. Rather than accepting the rules set by NL in exchange for them give us a place to discuss games you want to make a thread and use it as your soapbox for why their rules are "absurd", despite many of us giving you logical explanations as to why that isn't the case. English itself has many dialects and lexicon differences making it hard enough to understand native speakers sometimes, let alone a person that is obviously ESL. That is before you get to grammar and spelling issues. Not only that tone is hard to read in text unless you are willing to speak like an Elcor from the Mass Effect games. Even that is just for people that speak honestly. Trolls who like to bait and annoy others are a different animal because you can't often read intent easily (and they pull out the it's my opinion card as well).
Even if the site was willing to decend into a moderator's nightmare it would become a cacophony if text soon enough as there are do many users and so many languages. Derailed threads would be a norm around here. Even worse the site would quickly become unwelcoming to its target demographic.

You have options for speaking to others in your language, just as the rest of us who speak other languages do. Make a thread for gamers from your region and in English ask to speak outside of NL, I am sure people will jump on that. Or again spend time in communities that target your language rather than ranting about how others should chang to accommodate you. I hang out on Japanese forums and sites on occasion and when there I speak Japanese. I don't go there and ask why their site isn't in English. I am not from the Uk and there are references made on this site that I don't always understand. Yet no reason to complain, as I'm in someone else's house. Far more productive than complaining about the terms of service for this community. Plus it is good manners.

Yo. I am not trying to be a troll nor was I trying to create a "soap box." You shouldn't accuse people as trolls just because they say something that may be irrelevant or strange to you. People have opinions and while my opinion isn't a popular one, it was one that kind of bothered me. There is no reason to get salty over the word "absurd." Because to me, I thought the rule was absurd until a couple of days ago someone NICELY explained to me the reasoning behind the limitation without accusing me of being a jerk or wanting attention. And I do not need accommodation. I speak English just fine. I just thought it would be more interesting if the forum had languages from around the world. That is all. As for the "soap box" you speak of - I think you are creating it by being rude to me, my friend.

@Meowpheel Geez. I am sorry. I didn't mean for this thread to be like this. I am not up to a good start on this forum. I am gonna keep my big mouth shut for a while and just see what the retro people are up to. You were nice to me. Thank you.

@AlexSays I am guessing you're not a vegan then?....XD I am not telling people to share my interests, but... I mean we all do share the same interests and that is Nintendo... soooo... ya... you got me there big time, buddy. Not telling you how to live your life. Go do what you do, my friend.

@6ch6ris6 THANK YOU!!! That is German! I wish I spoke that language. You have made my day, friend. Yeah... I understand that people grew up learning one language. For the most part I did as well, but chose to try to learn new things and expand on my understanding. Sure, there are times where I am ignorant when I do not fully understand a particular restriction. But I like it when I learn especially from a few people from this thread (minus the rude ones. I do not learn $@#$ from mean people).

@Octane So you learned German in high school for three years? That's pretty impressive if you could type in the language. What helped you the most when you learned it?

@6ch6ris6 That would be great!!! I wanna try it out!!

@The_Pocket_Gamer I've edited your last five posts into a single one, please try not to post multiple times in a row.

Anyhow, I think the question of this thread has been answered and the situation resolved. If you're interested in casual talk, you're welcome to join in on the chitchat thread!

I will now proceed to lock it, if that's fine.
