Why do people care about scores so much? It's really starting to confuse me. A review goes up and there's a million comments about the score - "oh, I think it's a 6.2, not a 6." or "I guessed it was a 7". There's very little discussion on the finer points of the review ("nice review, <name>" is about all I see), but there's an infinite discussion on the score, how it compares to other games scores and so on and so forth.

What the hell is the difference between a 6.2 or a 6 game? What is a .2 of a score? Better yet, let's score things out of a million! Because while I would never buy a 745,664 game, a 745,665 game is well worth my money?

I can't believe people actually make purchasing decisions based on a completely arbitrary score. Never mind reading the review, the score is all that counts.

Personally, I'd suggest you get rid of scores completely. They're utterly unnecessary, or a simple "thumbs up/ thumbs down" system. Make people read the actual review.

in ways i agree with that and in some i don't because of 2 things
1. these are reviews from Mods them selves they are basically giving what they want for the score and that also being fair now of course if people don't like the score then of course some people show off some steam but heres a idea which leads to number 2. people could do if they don't like one persons review play the game make there own site and review it themselves of course this is all everyones opinions alot of people don't like the same games.

I always read several reviews and watch YouTube Videos to determine if a game is something for me and possibly worth a purchase. When I read reviews I look at what they say rather than the score they give it. And I only buy games that I am interested in without worrying about what some self-proclaimed reviewer thinks about it.

The question about dumping scores has been asked before. I and some other reviewers would be happy to do just that, but Metacritic is a factor in online gaming reviews like it or not and NL needs to have a presence there to get rep and advertising money to keep the site going.

It's just the nature of the beast!

Well its to do with recognition of the game. For me there is a significant difference between a 7 and a 8. Also, if there was a scoring scheme that was say a percentage up to 100%, you'd see far fewer games getting 10/10 on here wouldn't you? Also some site's and magazines have a sub-category that is effectively a touching distance of "gold award, essential category". A game even 1% out of that range isn't in that category. Fans of the game may quibbel over that 1 or 2% because the want recognition of the game. Especially if its from a reputeable and/or major reviewer that many people would read.

Anyway, as the cliche goes, it the CONTENT of the review that obviously really matters. A 6/10 or upwards game plus content that is positive for me as a gamer, would be games that I would generally consider from this site's review.

"They say video games are bad for you? That's what they said about rock n' roll."

There's no such thing as precision when it comes to someone's opinion, especially when when sumarizing the content of a written review into a single digit. Reviewers just have to sort of feel things out, decide what numbers best fit their opinions within the arbitrary limits imposed by the rating scale. For viewers and forum posters, they try to do the same, as everyone (presumably) understands these limitations, and regardless, it all amounts to a very informal discussion about a hobby. So no biggie.

Review scores don't bother me one little bit, so long as I agree. :)

Some people whine just to whine. It's just in their nature. I have problems with it myself but I just ignore the whiners.

But ask yourself this :

Am I concerned with scores? - or bias?

Do I make purchasing decision based on reviews - hah! Utterly laughable!

But do I have a sacred forum duty to confront game bashing and elitist groupthink? - yes, yes I do.

I do it for the lurkers, for those without a voice. Just like Tom Joad.

IGN: The holiday Wii lineup looks thin for the hardcore crowd. We see this. Gamers see this. What, if anything, is Nintendo planning to address it?

Oh good, I am neither a gamer or hardcore. Saves me from having to be IGNorant.

Uhh i get what your saying waltz, but the topic is generalizing the people on this site wwwaaaay too much lol, not the best argument to be making, but it is a fact amongst people. If you dont mind scores, stay that way, if others do, let them be that way, its a choice, and if you think you're making the right one in your eyes, whats the big deal?
