Topic: Why are easy games so taboo?

I like a good challenge as much as the next guy, but why is that people scoff at the occasional easy game? What's wrong with a game sometimes providing satisfying and addicting gameplay without feeling like a war of attrition? Can't video games just be a relaxing tool sometimes?

usually because they're over too quickly or are made in a way they get too repetitive really fast(though excessively hard games also suffer from this)

I would rather have an excessively easy game than an excessively hard game.

Let's say in Epic Yarn you cannot die and that makes the game very easy. But challenge yourself to beat each stage without being hit, and suddenly it is not that easy anymore. Or speedrun the game.

I feel that on easy games you can put yourself limitations and goals to make it more challenging, while in a hard game, if it lacks cheats, you cannot make it easier beyond spending tons of time trying to get better.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

This if a game is too easy do self imposed challenges don't ruin the game for people who LIKE easy games.

I love easy, relaxing games, but they need to be at the right price. Journey on PS3 was ridiculously easy, but as a cheap download title, it was perfect. What I don't like are full priced retail titles that insist on holding your hand, terrified of providing any sort of challenge. Some people accuse Nintendo of this with Mario games, but sticking with it will reveal a massive challenge later on.

I like how "Super Mario 3D world" does it (Yes, i finally got myself a WiiU :3 ), the base game is easy enough (I got to the Bowser castle world in 2 days, maybe I'm just awesomely skilled), but the difficulty and replay value lies in getting all the stars and stamps.

I'm a bit of a gaming wimp, overly difficult games put me off faster than very easy ones, but i love collecting stuff, and that can keep me going for ages.

Now you see, evil will always triumph, because good is dumb! >:D

I can totally relate, though I've played a lot of diverse games over the past year, I like to feel relaxed when playing them. I find that if a game is too difficult for me, I tend to conquer the first couple of hurdles. And after that, I just slack off...to much challenges in daily life already!

It's not just young people that play videogames! 😄 Check out my gaming blog at www.ladiesgamers.com.

When you ask me, the main issue isnt the difficulty in itself, but rather difficulty due to lots and lots of handholding.
Mario games for instance tend to be "easy" becaus ethey teach you the ropes as soon as that feature is implemented. And there is no two ways about it that 3D Worlds special worlds are fiendishly hard while the base game is a nice breeze.

I'm not really against easy games, I just have a problem with overly simple games. And lately, many games have been too simple in general, because it saves the developers time they'd need to balance the mechanics otherwise. It's a cop-out of the worst kind, and it's what makes easy games unpopular, because most of the time, these easy games are also painfully repetitive.

Besides, I'm not one to think games should be accessible to anyone. It's just like with drawing or singing: if you're not willing to improve, you'll never be good. All this wish-wash about "games for everyone" is just a roadblock for challenging games that get filled with crutches for those who are simply too lazy or impatient to get better (Super Mario Galaxy 2 had the level helper, the saddest joke of easy modes).

They are not taboo, they can still be fun. Like New Super Mario bros series, in the original, it was too easy (except a few starcoins) but it was saves by the minigames multiplayer mode.) where the newest (the Luigi version) was way more challenge and fun for me. Still, my cousins prefer the original because they has not played as much as me, and therfore has not so much training on Mario platformers.
Me on the othwr hand are awfull at minigames not made by Wario & friends, and therefull can eadaly be defeated in Mario party

Because people are stupid and assume easy is bad because games are easier (read: not unfair) than in the 80s.

In the same way that people make fun of quality FPS like Bioshock Infinite or Far Cry 3 because they're popular FPS in the post-COD4 world.

Taboo?

They're not taboo.
However, some people dislike like them because they prefer games that offer a greater challenge, rather than those they can cakewalk through.
It's not a hard concept to understand.

It all depends on how much content they provide and what type of experience they want to give the player.

  • If a game is too easy and has very little content I will be disappointed (like when I got Block Drop U last night on a sale and beat it in 20 minutes).
  • If it is difficult and provides a small amount of content (like Contra) then it becomes a very good experience, when you start doing well you start seeing new content very fast and it keeps the game from becoming boring.
  • If the game is easy and has lots of content (like Mario games are considered) then the easy gameplay expands while not punishing you, which turns into a fun experience. In Mario games you constantly experience the same mechanics in new and interesting ways.
  • If a game is difficult and has lots of content then we start running into problems. Sometimes it can be good but other times it becomes too much work. If a game requires too much mental power for too long it can become exhausting.

Why do gamers hate "easy" games? I think that isn't what gamers actually hate. I think gamers just hate experiences that aren't fulfilling which many call "easy."

EDIT: Why do I feel this is an extension of the other thread started by the OP.

I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

There is just the one really hard level - world crown - crown and the main thing that makes it so hard is that the rest of the game they ignored lots of the things you can do. (Or put a cat suit in the level). So instead of getting practice on the spin jump or long jump or backflip or wall jumps you just walk up the wall with the cat suit.

Easy games can be ok something like Sonic Lost World is really easy to just get through but hard to play well (At speed and not getting hit all the time).

Kirby's Adventure (NES) is another one its almost impossible to not finish a level but there is enough there to make trying to play it well enjoyable.

This if a game is too easy do self imposed challenges don't ruin the game for people who LIKE easy games.

Making a game easy ruins it for people who like a reasonable challenge.

How about the people who want easy games play with infinite lives / invincibility instead. (Or play different games).

SuperWiiU

If I want to play a game, I want something that challenges me. Games that are basically art galleries you walk through in an afternoon I'd rather skip and watch a movie.

I don't care for speedruns, completist quests, or other artificial ways to make something hard that isn't.

TeeJay

All Kirby games should be taboo then I guess.

If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.
