Okay, this may sound like a silly topic, but who likes English and writing in any way? The fields may include:

  • essays (arguing a point; persuading your readers; etc.)
  • rhetoric (the art of winning your prey's heart)
  • textual analysis (by textual, I mean anything that can be communicated, whether it is writing like essays and books OR art stuff like movies and paintings)
  • creative writing (short stories, fiction, narrative, poetry, etc.)
  • journals (writing about your experiences and your personal life)
  • research papers (you may define this yourself according to your college, high/middle school, or however you like to think about it)
  • grammar/conventions (adds polish and clarity to the stuff mentioned in the list above)/(Also regarded as the mechanics of writing and speeches)
  • editing/revising (whether it's critiquing the arguments/message of a given text OR fixing little grammar mistakes and polishing other peers' fabulous works)
  • reading books
  • any other field or topic that I might have missed that you should add in your post (and I'll add them to this list)

And, if you want, feel free to give your reason(s) why (and maybe a brief experience). I'll do my part in this thread later today.

Oh, and if you mention grammar and conventions, it's most likely because it helps to clarify any texts, opinions, and forum posts. Nevertheless, go right ahead and mention it if you must :3

EDIT: If you have any other meaningful post or question(s) that you want to contribute, that's also fine. However, please do not question the existence of this thread. I'm afraid that doing so will discourage users to contribute. The questioning should only be in the hands of the mods. Thank you!

I've already edited my initial post by quite a lot. Oh the joy of editing and revising it, just like how writers would revise their written works

Or maybe write an essay on the essay on the essay of essays?

I do love analysing films though. Blade Runner (which I am doing currently), its mise-en-scene is amazing.

Likewise, writing is kind of my life. I'm a journalist in the spare time I have outside of classes that are training me to be one.

I'm a journalism major and creative writing minor. In addition to writing three or four news stories a week (hard news reporting is probably my favorite form of writing these days), I'm also working on two novels and two short stories for both course requirements, as well as personal pleasure.

I'm also considering dipping my toes into essay writing (I mean legitimate essay writing, not like the kind you're asked to do in high school or freshman composition classes). as I have in mind a topic I feel needs to be examined much more closely and publicly.

Usagi-san shuddered. It was his firm conviction that most texts forced on students in English were corrupted by the chore of analysis. He had enjoyed reading “King Lear” the first time but if asked whether he felt the same after completing his Higher School Certificate the enquirer’s ears would have been assaulted by a din of oaths and expletives.
“Blade Runner” however was different. It held a unique place in the memory of the young man’s education next to Huxley’s “Brave new World”. If both had been men Usagi-san would have admitted they held some deep insight but were rather poor company. He endeavoured therefore to remember their lessons but forget the time spent together."

For me English was like art. Too much time spent on analysis and not enough focus on developing skills.
I like writing but I can't say I enjoyed English when I was in school...

I have a Bachelor's in English (Creative Writing focus), so I could grab my certification and teach any time I wanted. The problem is finding the jobs after the certification. Right now I'm waiting to hear back from the grad schools I applied to for my MFA.

So, to answer your question, I love English! I even had a novel published called "Taralisu." Language is beautiful. Being able to craft compelling stories, reflect on the human experience and imagination with poetry, or convey news in a way that's both objective and entertaining with journalism is wonderful.

I will say this: Finding work after the degree is difficult. My novel doesn't pay enough to live off of. I don't even work in my field right now (I do work for a college, though), and journalism jobs, even just freelance ones, are smothered under many, many applicants.

But purely as a subject, I can't regret my study decisions. Studying writing, the thrill of getting acceptance letters on the works you submit for publications, and reading great literature, it's a treat.

I'm about to graduate with my English major.... so I think it would be fairly safe to say that I'm a fan. I really like to read, and one of my favorite books is "A Confederacy of Dunces" by John Kennedy Toole (see avatar).

I like it, but not as much as math(s).

I like reading alot and writing to a degree but I hate English class. My main problem has always been sentence structure and such which is why I get low grades in English.

I love English in all aspects; even though my natural aptitude leans towards math (i was even briefly a "mathlete" when younger ), i was always told by teachers that i had a strong "ear" for grammar and a strength for writing.

I have my undergraduate degree in English Language and Literature (with additional concentrations in creative writing and philosophy), so i have certainly spent more than my share of writing, editing and reading through the years. I dabbled for a bit towards becoming a writer (with some very minor success), but not wanting to starve to death, i ended up taking the LSATs on a lark and now here i am in Lawyer-Land (which sadly does not resemble either Disneyland or LegoLand).

My writing has since fallen by the wayside, but i do still get to exercise the chops when writing motions or briefs or contracts and such (btw, it's amazing how many lawyers are horrible writers), which is probably my favorite aspect of my job.

I enjoy writing. At this point, I will probably end up making it part of my career, but who's to say at such a point before college.

Are you kidding me? I love English to death. I'll read almost anything. Specifically American history/World War ll. I also write as much as I can. Expressing my opinion is the best thing about writing and anyone who wants to start a business should really hop onto the writing bandwagon because it's an essential skill to learn in that field. Also if you're going to be a teacher.

My writing is developing into a skill... or a hobby in this case. I might join the National Guard then fall into the Navy. After a few years of that I'll retire and probably start my Journalist career and mainly publish my years of writing in the service on a personal blog while attending a college to become an official Journalist.

I don't know. lol

Just for you.

I really like English and writing almost to the point that I love it. In fact, I might just minor in it or something related (I'm currently in computer science pre-major), although I can't guarantee it. I specifically like textual analysis, journals, and rhetoric. Textual analysis makes me think really hard and encourages me to problem-solve, which is also important in my field. Journals helps me relieve stress and makes me think about life and the adventures that unfold. Rhetoric helps me "market" to any person that I...persuade, which is very important in any writing AND the entertainment industry (movies, games, comics etc.). I also want to dabble into creative writing sometimes.

@James lol, you seem to be the opposite of my 10th grade English teacher. He is very nice, sympathetic, and inspiring (like how I'd see other English teachers). Sadly, he hates video games
