Ah yes, the lingering question that stands before you and the game's story intro: difficulty. How hard do I want the game to be?
I'm curious: when you simply play a game for enjoyment, what difficulty do you play on? Just for enjoyment, not to complete the game, not to unlock some super duper extra special hidden bonus ending, and not going into the game with an intended difficulty in mind. You just boot up the game and go. What do you usually choose?
It depends on the game, but I usually pick the middle difficulty. Of course, it really isn't set in stone. For games that have two modes, like Normal and Hard, I switch back and forth with each playthrough.
What about you?

No matter what, I always pick medium difficulty. I'm not looking to anger myself with over-the-top challenge, but I'm not looking for some simple cakewalk.
Are there any games in particular that you intentionally alter the difficulty because it's too easy/hard?

I always play games for enjoyment... even when I'm playing competitively, it's because I enjoy doing so.
Well, it's pretty obvious we play games for enjoyment. I'm just asking what difficulty you play on when you have no specific goal in mind.

Depends on the game/genre, I guess....I tend to gravitate towards "normal" or the default. For something like The Wonderful 101 though, I am getting some enjoyment at trying it on the harder difficulties... but then you gotta unlock those anyway. I just went on normal there, which just happened to be the hardest difficulty at the outset.
Graphics come after gameplay. Every time. It takes more than being pretty to be a good game.
I like to play games on the most balanced difficulty setting. Hard in FEA is nice as its not too easy like on Normal or too luck based like on Lunatic. If I feel competent with my skills, then I might play on a harder difficulty, as long as it requires skill rather than luck to beat it.
Hard as one can go. I find it is more stratifying and the extra degree of thinking is always nice, which makes things better. Plus not only am I enjoying myself with my game of choice, I feel like I accomplished something, aka Lunatic+. There are sometimes though like Cave story and yeah.... hard mode is more challenge mode rather then just added difficultly and it takes the fun out of it. @SuperPokefan95 - Luck is only in Lunatic+, Lunatic is puzzle based.

I always play with the goal to beat the game... or in arcade style games, to get a highscore... or in competitive multiplayer, to beat the other players...
always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)
Normal, or the one in between. I always look at the second choice as normal no matter what the menu sign says. (I don't like getting frustrated to unfairly hard modes like lunatic mode from Fire Emblem awakening...
The easiest difficulty, then I turn it up if I want to replay.
Though I have no problem beating games that have no difficulty options (like Zelda or Metroid), so I probably wouldn't have an issue starting out with normal on other games.
