Do you tend to recreate the same character (as much as possible) in each game?
I do. See, one of my favourite characters back when I played D & D regularly was a female, elven assassin called Amelia le Fey. Like any good character, Amelia developed a great personality as the D & D campaign continued, and over the course of the year (every Saturday night for a year essentially - 50 game sessions), she became very dear to me.
So now, with RPGs especially, when there is the option to make my own character, I will typically create a thief (or assassin) female character, and call her Amelia (le Fey if the game allows last names).
I usually create a character that suits the game I'm playing. If its similar, then I will use the same characters over again, but that doesn't happen very often anymore. That's my rule for creating characters in general, whether its an online persona, a comic that I'm writing (for fun), or just coming up with a personality for a mute character. So no, it's not a tendancy, not for me at least.

That applies to male characters for me, so I halfway with you.
Just for whatever reason I really liked the character I came up with with Amelia, so I've stuck with it - and in a small way it provides me with a mental background and personality for the games when I use that name. I've yet to come up with a male character that I've found interesting enough to return to a second time.
I always rename Link to "Landon" as an homage to my favorite D&D character from back in the day (a half-elf Ranger, later a Paladin).
I also periodically create a "Landon" or "Landon Thrace" in other fantasy games (like Oblivion, for example); typically an elven or half-elven (or analgous race) character with Ranger-esque concentrations (as a D&D player, you know what i mean).

All of my characters are usually different classes in every game, like in WOW my main character is a Warrior, and in LOTRO my character was a Burglar, and going even farther, my main "job" in Free Realms is an Archer.
I make different characters for every game where I have customisation options. I like the variety. It also stems from having played a few games where you're encouraged to make multiple characters, like Phantasy Star Online and Ragnarok Online.
I have 2 characters/character names that tend to make it into most MMOs and PC RPGs, although I tend to change the look between games. I tend to exploring the editor a good bit then decide on something humorous rather than try to continually find ways to create the same look in new/different editors.
In terms of games where I can name characters, I wanna say that I've had the same main character name in every Dragon Quest game. Dunno why exactly....been using it since I was 5--no reason to stop now

Whenever I make a character in a game I always name him after Mugen from Samurai Champloo (my favorite anime)...
"Don't make enemies, they'll stab your heart; don't make friends, they'll stab your back. Including me, including you, all men are trash. Don't love; don't be loved. Have nothing to do with other; live in isolation."

For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday. [url=http://www.backloggery.com/jumpmad]Unive...
In any game I play that allows for custom characters I usually try to recreate one of my superheroes (speaking of which, I need to get around to writing those stories...). I just see which of my characters can be recreated in that game's editor (my non-human characters can be made fairly well in SPORE). This is especially good in Freedom Force (not the NES game) where making superheroes is pretty much the entire focus of the game.
