Yeah, it's the staff that causes the problems. If the horizontal lines weren't slanted on the sharp notation, it would just look like two vertical lines when you place a sharp in a space on the staff. For that reason, the horizontal lines are usually bolded as well but they don't have to be.

I know this thing - has a pretty weird name. I always just called it a dash. I still can't remember what it's called.
