@ogo79 - I guess I don’t really know either, but if it’s a beer, and if I ever see it for sale; I’ll grab two cans, and we’ll give it a try. I’m guessing they’ll be gross.

@bimmy-lee You'd have to drink a lot of it to feel anything, though, since malt is always quite low in percentage. Over here, there's even malts, from big brewers like Amstel and Heineken, that are 0%.

@ThanosReXXX - That’s really interesting. There must be at least a decent market for it if the macros are sniffing around it. I have never seen a malted beer for sale anywhere I’ve been in the US. I could have missed them, or not been in the right places. I’d just like one for the experience. I just like malty things, as weird as that sounds.

@ThanosReXXX @bimmy-lee Nearly all beers are made with malt. There are a few rice and maize beers, but anything else is made with malt. Why they started calling low-alcohol beers ''malt beer'' is beyond me. It's a terrible name, since it technically applies to all beers.

@Octane - Yes, it’s one of the core ingredients. I’ve been told that malt beer is especially malty though. It’s been brewed to bring the malt forward. My friend that’s had one described it as a beer flavored soda, and it was malty sweet. I’m typing the word “malt” a LOT, but I’m fine with it.

@VigilThief Congrats on winning the third price in the Fifa tournament. Shame about the English, but what can you do? Both countries still get quite a few millions in rewards, regardless...

@bimmy-lee I'm pretty sure that a country the size of the USA has it's own equivalent of a Beer King somewhere in the area. And probably several of them...

@Octane Yeah, I know what beer is made from. Beer is also made from hops, wheats and barley, but apparently, the industry decided to call low or non-alcoholic beers malt beers. What can you do?

Over here, back in the early nineties, when the government started to broadcast infomercials about the whole designated driver & don't drink and drive thing, there was a simultaneous insurgence and growth of malt beers on the market. Lots of brands came with their own 0% variants, none of them even remotely tasted like beer, so verdicts always ended up in labels like dishwater, ditch water, sewer distilled and so on.

Only in recent years have these non- alcoholic brews finally achieved a result that at least resembles the real thing.

Either way, they're called malts and to me, that's just a label for "not real beer", in large part thanks to all the brainwashing that the government and the beer brewers have done. It's hard to unlearn something, once it's been so imprinted in your brain...

And yes, it IS a terrible name, but maybe that's just subliminal marketing from the brewers so that we REAL beer drinkers stay the hell away from the stuff and only go for the genuine, alcohol-infused beer...

My last beer last night was a Shorts Double Magician, London style red ale. It’s a double version of their Magician red ale brew, and it was intense. Not sure what makes it a “London” red, but it was a huge, chewy beer. Malty and syrupy. It took me about 45 minutes to finish, and its raw power abruptly ended my beer drinking session when I finished it, but it was time.

@ThanosReXXX - I’m starting to think the “malt beers” my friend described while visiting Germany are not the same malt beers we’re talking about here. He said they were like a desert drink, so maybe he had a special version of a malt beer, or he was just told it was a malt beer.

It’s a big country, but I’d like to consider the time I spent living in Portland, OR as giving myself higher odds than normal of finding something weird or niche (in the US) in the world of food and drink. Especially since I’m a bit of a seeker in those areas. Plus, as mentioned, I don’t think the malt beer described to me is malt beer.

@bimmy-lee For clarity's sake: there's of course also the low-alcohol malt beers, so that sounds like it could be a dessert beer to me. Much like a radler, actually, so maybe something between 2 - 3% of alcohol.

Far as I know, there's no different kinds of malt beer, other than the non and low-alcoholic kinds, regardless of country or region:

@ThanosReXXX - Another mystery solved thanks to Wikipedia. The second paragraph about Malzbier/Malta/wheat soda is probably the answer. It even links to soft drinks/sodas and implies common improper classification of Malta and wheat beer as Malzbier, and we could probably safely assume Malzbier as malt beer for an outsider in the region. I bet he had a Malzbier or Malta and thought it was a malt beer as he described it more like a soft drink.

@bimmy-lee Well, that's also what I liken radler to: a soft drink, seeing as it's a mix of lemonade and beer. That certainly sounds like a dessert beer to me, so I think it's probably safe to say that, whatever the case, malt beer IS a low percentage alcohol beer, or as some countries call it: a light beer.

On a side note: talking about beer mixed with lemonade also reminds me of Royal Club Shandy, which I used to drink a lot when I was a teen...

@ThanosReXXX - I looked them up, they sound refreshing. Especially on a warm day. I love a good radler with fruit juice, especially a sour citrus fruit with some bite. On the super rare occasion that I have a day totally free, with little to no responsibilities; I’ll sometimes have a fruit radler in the morning after my coffee. I think it’s actually more eye opening than caffiene.

@bimmy-lee I always get a bunch of Amstel Radler's every time the weather's hot. In fact, I've got a couple of cans stored in the fridge right now. Think I'll go grab one, since all this talk of Radlers has made me thirsty...

@ThanosReXXX - Ha, cheers! I have an assortment cold in the refrigerator for a pro wrestling pay per view tonight. Mostly IPAs, but there’s a Dogfishhead Blackberry Fort I’m pretty excited about. I’ll hold it up and nod in your direction.

I really cut down on alcohol consumption (did lab work 2 mos ago and my liver enzymes were high so doctor said I gotta cut down on alcohol and supplements), not that I drank all that much at all, but right meow I have one bottle of Milk Stout from Left Hand Brewing (it's a local microbrew here in CO).

I'm a huge fan of stout pretty much my favorite beer type...but recently (prior to cutting back) been drinking lots of sweetened beers (I know y'all gonna laugh but I liked "Not Your Father's" brand of beer) and ciders.

@Lloiddd Why would we laugh? As you can clearly see, just a couple of comments above yours, I posted a picture of a can of Radler, which is a combination of beer and lemon-flavored lemonade. And that contains only 2% of alcohol, but it's REALLY refreshing on a hot summer's day, so I don't care about that percentage, and drink 'em anyway.

Even better: yesterday, I went to the cinema with a good friend of mine, and all they had there, were non-alcoholic Radlers. Drank 'em all the same...

What country you live in bro? Is that norm in theaters where you live "non-alcoholic" beer?

FC Switch and 3DS 2810-1724-7536

ThanosReXXX

@Lloiddd I live in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Originally from California, though.

As for it being the norm: I could imagine that they would want to prevent visitors from becoming drunk or inebriated in the cinema, which might potentially cause trouble, seeing as not everyone is able to hold his liquor equally well, but in this particular case, it just so happened that the normal Radlers (which are still only 2%) were simply sold out, so all that was left was either non-alcoholic Radlers, various sodas or regular beer, and we just felt like drinking Radlers, so that's why we ended up taking the non-alcoholic ones, seeing as these were the only option.

P.S.

@ThanosReXXX Oh gotcha. Yeah makes sense.

Back in the day beers were rarely sold in US movie theaters, but now many to most of them do. I am terrible with any sort of food when watching anything, except maybe baseball games. I get glued esp. in theaters I could care less for food. Plus they're expensive. lol

I do wish they'd serve boba or smoothies/shakes more. lol

FC Switch and 3DS 2810-1724-7536

ThanosReXXX

@Lloiddd Yeah, prices are ridiculous. Don't know about the current US prices, but over here, prices for any drink in theaters are almost three times the actual price. They had a "discount" on the Radlers, which was 2 bottles for €5, which would be roughly the same in dollars, but if you buy them in the regular store or mall, you'd only pay €0.89 per bottle, and that includes a 10 cent deposit fee...
