So, in you opinion, what was the best gaming generation and why? Based off of games quality and to a lesser degree quantity, as well as software and hardware innovation, .....

2nd gen // 1976-1983: birth of the home console, arcade ports and novelty (Atari 2600/5200, Magnavox Odyssey, Intellivision)

3rd gen // 1983-early 1990s: the 8-bit era, 2D takes shape, consumer acceptance (Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Master System, Atari 7800)

4th gen // 1987-late 1990's: the 16-bit era, perfection of 2D games (Super Nintendo Entertainemtn System, TurboGrafx-16, Sega Genesis)

5th gen // 1993-early 2000's: the 32-bit era, 3D gaming becomes mainstream (Sony Playstation, 3DO, Nintendo 64, Sega Saturn)

6th gen // 1998-late 2000's: framework for 3D gaming is set in stone (Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo Gamecube, Sony Playstation 2, Xbox)

7th gen // 2005-present: HD and online gaming becomes the norm, motion controls trend (Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii)

8th gen // 2013-present: Up in the air, but probably the evolution of online-social gaming, streaming and VR becomes a thing? (Playstation 4, Xbox One, Wii U)

This!

Between the SNES and Genesis, there were likely close to 100 'must play' games that generation.

I'm gonna go with..........

1. 4th gen, or 16 bit era, just based on timeless quality and wealth of great titles....
2. 6th gen, just tons of great games for a number of consoles, a lot of these titles have aged pretty gracefully and are still fun
3. Up for grabs between the 3rd gen (classics), 5th gen (innovation), 7th gen (like a slightly less cool 6th gen)

The Limeys can count the Amiga CD32 as well, and it's the Genesis, not the Mega Drive,......

I know for fact that my favorite 1 vs 1 fighting game was on snes (Killer Instinct) that I still play to this day, and there are plenty more golden games throughout that generation that I play any chance that I can get, the games grab my attention more then modern games really, but of course I still look forward to some new ones.
Other then that the 5th generation was also golden!

6th gen, mainly because everyone knew how to have exclusives and multiconsole stuff simultanously, an idea that's sadly been lost

Non-binary, demiguy, making LPs, still alive

@Undead_Terror: Man that commercial brought back memories. Its funny how a made up word like Blast Processing made such an impact during that time.

I'm voting for the "5th gen // 1993-early 2000's: the 32-bit era, 3D gaming becomes mainstream (Sony Playstation, 3DO, Nintendo 64, Sega Saturn)". This was the generation that changed EVERYTHING. PS1 laid the ground work for PS2; 3DO and Sega Saturn burned out but became better game developers for all systems and the N64 was just amazing considering it was a cart based game and the others were using discs.

It's kinda funny how that commercial showed Mario Kart with its mode 7, something the Genesis would have been incapable of replicating without specialty chips in the cartridge.

Proud owner of both a Genesis and SNES though.....best game, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, best overall console......the SNES.....

I think the 5th gen, mainly because some of the great genres in videogaming reached perfection by that time. Ocarina, RESI, Metal Gear Solid, Mario64, FF7, ISS Pro, Gran Turism etc...all these games were head and shoulders above what came before them and really different because of 3D, so it was a very exciting generation - everything felt radically new.

Top-10 games I played in 2017: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (WiiU) - Rogue Legacy (PS3) - Fallout 3 (PS3) - Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - Guns of Boom (MP) - Sky Force Reloaded (MP) - ...

Not only that but they are comparing a racing game to a platform. If anything they should have had Mario World on the back of the milk truck for a good comparison. But back then video game commercials made little sense since they were usually done by people at an ad agency who know next to nothing about video games.

Agree, and call me silly, but Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (shown in the commercial) is graphically more impressive and flashier than Super Mario World anyways.

Definitely the 6th generation (GameCube, PS2, XBox).
Back then consoles started going online, and competition was purely between consoles, not with PC gaming. Some of the best games of all time were released on these platforms, and quality gameplay was a focus when looking for new games. Also, no smart device games to alienate newbies and casuals from quality gaming.
Everything could've been so beautiful - but the 7th generation ruined it all...

7th generation is the best because it's the first time that gaming was truly inclusive.

2D graphics and retro gaming saw a resurgence, motion controls gave us games that could be played with kids or grandparents, while 3D games had never looked or played better. Big publishers might have dominated the release schedule, but indie games and digital distribution made their first appearances and blew away any preconceived expectations about what the "little guy" could bring to the table. On top of that, we also have backwards compatibility with 6th generation games (true, the degree of compatibility varied... but Nintendo went 100% and Sony matched that for a short while).

If you couldn't enjoy gaming during the 7th gen, you were doing something wrong: this is the only time there has literally been something for everyone to enjoy.

Hmm I dont know if I would say its more impressive flashier yes cause of the speed factor. But that's honestly another subject for another day.
