I feel like my taste in music springs from two fountains of American 20th century music. At an early age I felt drawn to Blues based music, and now very much believe that the I IV V based changes are universal and ingrained in the human experience. This has grown more directly into an appreciation of Jazz particularly in the bop and post bop eras especially as I began to study music. When I came of age I feel in love with the music of R.E.M.. Through an exploration of that I became fixed on all music of a sort of post Velvet Underground variety. I'm very attached to the artist associated with 80s and 90s college radio ie Camper Van Beethoven, They Might Be Giants, Robyn Hitchcock, ect and 1970s Britsih Glam Rock ie David Bowie, Lou Reed, T.Rex.

In the 21 century I love Nerdcore Hiphop. Big fan of Mc Frontalot and Crudbump. Anyone here into nerdcore?

Power, heavy, heavy/power, US power, epic, traditional, neoclassical, symphonic, melodic death, doom, doom/death, gothic, extreme metal. With death metal, I stay with classics and thrash I listen to rarely (mostly late 80s/early 90s).

I would love to listen more music, like in reviewing/moderator days years ago and learn about even more bands, but time constrains and other bad things consider, I had to drop it. Anyway, because of that I know so many of them, I'm not running out of music to listen to. Although there is little sadness.

  • Video Game music
  • J-Pop/Rock (though mostly stuff introduced to me through video games)
  • 80's Pop/Rock (stuff like Michael Jackson and Huey Lewis & the News)
  • Modern Country

Though I also find a random song from another genré/era every now & then that I like (Surfin' Bird, Cheesburger in Paradise, etc).

The only genrés I generally don't like are Rap, Hip-Hop, & Metal (all kinds).

I listen to everything except metalcore, screamo, and dubstep. But My favourite genres are instrumental rock/metal/jazz, j-rock, almost every variation of metal (see my signature for examples), chiptune electronica (the Jake Kaufman variation), and the occasional modern orchestra piece (like the Ar Tonelico soundtrack).
Generally, if it's rock/metal, and part of a videogame soundtrack, I'll probably like it - if it's really high-quality composition (Ishiwatari os the undefeated king of heavy rock!).

I'll listen to anything good I find (even if it's only good by being a guilty pleasure pop song) but I tend to go towards rock music nowadays. Usually either 80s New Wave, 90s Alternative or the more catchy and pop rock parts of indie rock.

Quite the necro thread...

Anyway, I listen to a lot of music, but probably a solid 50% of my library (609 albums by 166 bands/artists) is 1958-1988 rock and heavy metal. My favorite bands are Rush, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Black Sabbath. There's some modern metal in there as well, like Trivium, Stratovarius, and Tool. Don't mind some death metal, like Dark Tranquility, but I have to be in the right mood for it.

Outside of rock/heavy metal, I also listen to quite a bit of American jazz (Miles Davis, John Coltraine, Art Blakey, etc) and blues (BB King, Muddy Waters) from the 50s through 70s and a soft spot for 80s pop music like Bonnie Tyler and Billy Joel.

I also have a decent sized collection of symphonies, concertos, etc from the greater classic era. Bach and Tchaikovsky are favorites.

Some odds and ends, some anime and game soundtracks, a few albums from Japanese bands like Outrage, Yousei Teikoku, and Sound Horizon. Like 3 Muse albums. Metric. I dunno.

Whatever genre you attempt to lump Blue Oyster Cult into. I love all their stuff except Curse of the Hidden Mirror.
Instrumental Rock and Metal (Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, Tony Macalpine, Joe Satriani, Mestis, and so on.)

A singer can make or break a band for me instantly. I want to love Periphery for example, but the singer is just plain intolerable for me.

For me it's a little bit of everything, but favorites are:
The Beatles
Frank Zappa/ The Mothers
Pink Floyd
Tom Waits
Leonard Cohen
They Might Be Giants

Susumu Hirasawa

Kanye West (not joking)

Lately I've been listening to a lot of soundtracks. Most recently Twin Peaks.

I was a pop kid who became a rock teen and then eventually became a pop and rock adult.

I like most things if its good but this is what I tend to lean towards.
