honestly? SMB3, and that's the only reason it edges out SMW as my favorite SMB title. SMW is excellent as well, but SMB3 had some incredibly devilish levels and ingenious ideas within that still send me into fits when i'm having an off day, lol. i can breeze through SMW without losing a single life, though. :3
btw, i don't really count SMW2 as a Mario title, since Yoshi plays quite differently from Mario. Yoshi is in a (well-deserved!) class by himself :3

I have to agree for the same reasons. I recently played through the NES version of SMB3 and tried to go from World one level one all the way to Bowser without warping but after tearing out my hair for an hour on the second fortress in world 6 I finally just said screw it and warped lol. The levels in SMB3 are just beautifully done and besides the thing that puts it over in my book is 5-3 which anyone who has played SMB3 knows is the level with the Shoe.

The reason I preferred 2 to one is that they reduced that number of overhead levels (or whatever you would call them) and didn't make the levels rely on the gravity thing so much. Plus they added Yoshi!

But the gravity gimmick is what defines the Galaxy series.
2D: I'll go with SMB3 ftw, 2 coming close. Can't get over how imaginative 2 really was. Dream world, throwing veggies. The POW. Graphics were horrible, but still fun.

@Kid_Crono: SMB3 isn't hard, but if you're trying to do everything in the game and you're having an off day, it can still be challenging as hell. that's why i think its level design is better than SMW's, which i can breeze through even on the worst of days :3
